A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

wow that is alot of pomacanthus maculosus, you have there !! Large Parrot fish too!

What are they eating in the middle, that grouper looks like he could eat most of the fish in the aquarium if he wanted too!

How is your protein skimmer working, is there some way to make the water clearer, filtration through sand?

Are these fish all found locally? IT certainly is looking like a large predator exhibit ! Do you have any Morays?

Too many questions, I'll try to answer all of them :D

This is only part of it, it is very difficult to capture the whole thing.

Yeah I like my parrots. I think I am missing one though. :eek1:

They are eating a dead Barracuda. I was about to take it out and then saw the strange movement around it, so I sat down to see what will happen. The grouper can and does eat from the fish. I am planning to move the groupers to a dedicated section in the fish farm.

Doing fairly well. Here is a video:

All the fish are caught locally. Most of the pomacanthus maculosus are caught in the sea (port) just across from the aquarium. No Morays but the plan is to add a shark soon. :)

Hello
your tank looks great hear are a few ideas

1.use the tide for your pump its free and will not to fail.

2.as for a skimmer use a drain on a float so as to stay at the top of the water and let it go back to the sea

i live in Las Vegas NV
and there is a great place you may direct some of the big questions to

Nahham,

Out of the 5 hours that i had to stand watch (I'm in the navy), i used 4.5 of those 5 to read through your thread lol. Absolutely awesome. Even though i'll never be able to anything close to what you have, it is truly inspiring and i'm quite jealous.

Fortunately for me being in the navy i get to travel, and one of the ports were hitting is Abu Dhabi! I was wondering how close your residence is to Abu Dhabi and if it wasnt to far and not an inconvenience, would it be possible to visit, oogle and drool over your small ocean?

Been a while since I had the time to sit down and read through this.

Electricity prices right now is low enough for me not to worry about the cost. This is a good idea when this situation changes. Thanks.

I never thought of this before. I actually have an elbow that facing up that drains the skimate out of the skimmer body. I do run into problems when the level of the water drops lower than that elbow. I'll look into it. Do you have any DIY tips?

Now this is impressive. Thanks for the info.

I'm not cooling it. Since I want it to be local, I would rather keep it similar to the ocean around me. There are no plans to add any corals from outside the local community so temperature fluctuations isn't a problem.

Will I happy the thread helped you through that.

We are around 2.5 hours away from AD. There isn't much to see right now since the groupers ate most of the fish in the tank :mad2:. I keep telling people this won't work but they keep insisting it will. Guess who is right? :lol2: Too late for the fish though.

Starting next month, there will be major changes that will happen to the tank and I'll hopefully update this thread. If you really want to come by anyway let me know so that I can arrange something for you.

Looks like yo've been adding more fish lately?
Any new updates on the tank?
Will be in Dubai Next week unfortunatly got a very tight schedule and doubt I can make the drive to Ajman...

19,000g??? Whoa... too cool! Keep up the hard work, thanks for sharing this wonderful master piece!
Glad you liked it.

I will be starting some major renovations by next month (hopefully). It is all planned.

You are always on a tight schedule. Let me know if you have some free time.

It looks like it has been AGES since I posted in my own thread. Everything is sorted now though for what I will call "The Big Bang of 2012". Here is what is going to happen in the next several weeks:

  • There will be a face-lift for the whole tank. Planning to cover it with stone and have some lighting to accent the whole area.
  • Glass will be repaired. I opted for repairing the three pieces of glass even though one doesn't seem to have a problem. Since I am taking two out and going through all the trouble of emptying the tank, I might as well make sure the third glass doesn't leak in the near future.
  • Tons of rock will be added to the tank. It sat there curing for the longest time. I guess they are ready for the big move.
  • More lights will be added to the tank. A total of 6 more lights (at least). I am also trying some unusual alternatives for lighting since it is only for night-viewing.
  • A long strip of light will be added to act as moon-lighting. It will definitely add to the view of the tank after the lights go off.
  • A gigantic sand filter will be installed. I am also thinking of an ozone generator to be installed with the sand filter.
  • The shading over the seating area will be altered and lighting will be added.
Keep tuning in for "before" photos and progress photos are we move forward.

So it started:

This picture was taken at 2:45pm local time.

aquarium2-2012-02-06.jpg

Two submersible pumps rated at 4,000 gph are being used to drain the tank.

aquarium3-2012-02-06.jpg

I will try to keep the refugium going since it is host for some of the more exotic fish I was worried to add to the tank because of the grouper(s).

aquarium4-2012-02-06.jpg

2 hrs and 18 minutes later and the level of the water doesn't seem to have moved much. I wonder why? :)

I am happy to report that the groupers has been moved out of the tank to a secluded area in the fish farm. The biggest one is lunch tomorrow. The crew is still hard at work moving the remaining fish out of the tank to a sectioned-off area in the fish farm.

The Big Bang of 2012 Update

The Big Bang of 2012 Update

After the first day of work, and 4 strong (well not that strong) here is where we are:

aquarium5-2012-02-06.jpg

aquarium6-2012-02-06.jpg

We are still draining the last bit of water. Tomorrow we will:

  • Start removing sand from the aquarium. We are planning to remove nearly half of the sand. The tank nearly has 2 feet of sand right now.
  • Clear the middle areas of sand entirely so that we could have a rock base on the bottom. Do you think I should also somehow glue the rock together?
  • The shades will be removed tomorrow, "enhanced", painted, and drilled for lighting and then reinstalled.

More photos to come..

bummer that you have to take it down.

i have seen where people will drill rock and use a piece of plastic rod to hold rocks together. with the size rocks you use use that would have to be stainless steel rods. rebar would work but would rust and that could be a problem???

keep the updats coming :)
