A bit confused about my skimmer

How do you know when you have the skimmer set right? Mine (ASM - G3) seems to either take too long to get the waste out or my cup fills with water quickly. How do you know it is set right? Since I have high nitrates and my skimmere is not working overtime, I think I might not have it set right. Thx.

I have the same skimmer. At first, it was in a 20 gallon sump for my 55 fowlr. Every once in a while, especially when the auto top-off kicked in, I would find a huge puddly mess on the floor. When the fresh water would get sucked in, it would just overflow the collection cup and spill over the sides of the 20 gallon sump. Every time I did a water change, I would have to constantly readjust it and come back in about an hour to see how it was doing.

Since I upgraded to a 125 fowlr with a 30 gallon sump with baffles, I never have to touch the thing. If the top-off seems to be your problem, I'd try adding baffles. I don't know how big your sump is, but if you only have a 75 gallon tank, I can't imagine it being very big.

Good Luck.

Thx, and I don;t have an auto top off. I am concerned that my skimmer is not getting enuogh matter out of the tank if I set it so low that hardly anything gets sucked up for days or that I have set it too high that I get pure water (come to think of it, that might be happening at water changes - I never noticed!). I guess I'll have to constantly play with it to get the right amount of gunk tyo come out.

I have to think that because my nitrates are high, my skimmer should be getting more out of the tank.

You should have gotten instructions in the manual for setup.
Generally speaking, the water level in the chamber should be @ the bottom of the riser tube or neck when there are NO bubbles.
If the skimate is too wet either lower the amount of water or bubbles. Hope that helps.
