A couple good pics of my TBsaltwater rock flower nem

Bent

I got nothin'
Finally got to snap a couple good shots of him.

Can anyone tell a species here? It came from the Gulf of Mexico with the TBsaltwater live rock.

He's a beautiful peach color with a neon green mouth. He's also huge. About 5" diameter.

Heteractis Aurora

Google images inclines me to this one. I'm a bit freaked right now cause it says 10"...that's huge in my book.

It also says it's a natural host to a number of clowns. Not oscii of course.

Edit:
So I guess not a rock flower at all then.

No, pretty sure (ok, absolutely certain) it is a rock/ flower nem, especially as H. aurora is not found in the Caribbean, but in the Indo-Pacific...

It's definitely E. crucifer. Can't be H. aurora since all of Richard's rock and livestock come from off the coast of Florida.

Yep you guys are right.

I didn't know they got this big. He's not very colorful but dang he's meaty.

That thing was that big when in came in on your rock?

Lord No. It's grown out quite a bit. Here's some progress pics:

About a week later I uprooted him and moved him to the sandy section on the right side of the tank:

About 14 days after I got him. You have to zoom in to the right side. It's pretty bleached:

About a month later, I was starting to get some algae and his bleaching was starting to repair:

Fast forward to last month right before I had to black the tank out to fight that hair algae:

During the blackout he decided to move to the other side of the rock island, then a couple weeks later decided to move again this time a little left of where he was before:

What are you feeding it?

I do a little bit of everything.

I feed him about once or twice a week, sometimes more sometimes less.

I have cubes of mysis that I thaw with some tank water and suck it up with a turkey Baster and blast onto his tentacle.

I have a hodgepodge of blender goodies that I feed him the same way as the mysis. Scallops, cheap fish fillets, shrimp, squid, brine, krill, mysis all put in the blender and chopped.

Sometimes I'll feed him good size chunks of frozen prawns (thawed obviously). Or thaw a bit of whole krill.

He also catches food that I feed to the other inhabitants.

Mixing it up like this keeps me interested. If there's any one thing I hate it's a routine.

No problem. I really just started doing it because feeding it shrimp chunks was getting boring. Lol

Got pics?

How did you pry him off to move him originally?

And do they prefer to be closer to the sand or higher up in the rocks? I'm just wondering if I should move mine.

I think it's cool that it started to color up after a while, mine is snow white right now.

I used the ice cube trick. Just get an ice cube and hold it next to (but don't touch) the foot. The cold temp will make him pick up and start moving. It took me about 15min and about 5 cubes before I was able to pry him off. Just watch for the foot to start slowly moving away.

Generally they prefer to be in the sand. They like to have their foot attached to a rock and sandwiched between the rock and the sand. So if you have a rock on the bottom, you can dig a small sand tunnel under it and place him in it, then he will attach to the rock and eventually stretch out from under it.

I snapped a few more today with a better camera. I'd like to build a lens and use my wife's dslr to get a good shot of him.

Here's my favorite from today. You can really see where he's starting to get some color. Now don't mind some of the reds that you see, I believe those may actually be from the light and not from his pigment. He is starting to get some green around the mouth and some purple around the edges. Pretty exciting!

Here's a closer one where you can really see the green around the mouth:
