Originally posted by PSam So, yep, I'm a reef-hugger. Have seen up close and personal "questionable" collection practices of reef life for the aquarium trade, and it is pretty sickening. IMHO, species like A. Jacquelineae which are rarely seen on the reef should be left there. That's one less mother colony in nature.
Where do you think those aquacultured corlas came form in the first place? You yourself don't know if it was collected by a *questionable* buisness or a legit one do you? So if it was snagged by a *good* one does that make it ok? There are crappy people in every buisness and they do things that damage the earth/animals all the time.
I have a hard time believing that the reefing hobby will destroy the coral reefs of the world. There are MANY more and much LARGER issues that are destroying the reef. Maybe focus on those instead?
read the modern coral reef aquarium by fossa and nilsen. lots of info on how reefers are getting the blame for ruining the reefs but we really have almost no effect on it, not compared to all the envirnmental changes we create. have you seen the garf website? they talk about growing corals to restock areas desimated by the environment and things of that nature. i think were helping the reefs out sometimes more that hurting them. sometimes not though..... even in areas like the philipines the most collecting will be in the highly populated areas but theres tons of islands and reefs out there. well thats my 2 cents for today
