A couple of recetn LFS experiences (Reefwise and Tropiquatics).......

OK, so I had read a lot about Reefwise recently (both good and not no good), so I had to go and check that palce out for myself.

I went there this past weekend. I was not harassed by anyone (as I read about). Both staff were very pleasant, not pushy at all, and willing to answer any questions I had when I had them. Personally, I thought the staff were really nice (especially the owner who I spoke with mostly).

Layout of the Store: Persoanlly I was very very very very very impressed. Tanks were very clean, I loved the bigger tanks for bigger fish, and mostly loved the QT system that they use! They are in the process of starting a new QT system that has bigger tanks for bigger fish (also impressive), but just the QT system in general is very impressive for a LFS. I spoke to the owner about this. I was told fish are QT'ed for about 30 days before being sold. He stated if someone wants to buy a fish that is in QT, they can put half down, and pay the rest when the fish is done being QT'ed. Money is returned if the fish does not make it. I have to say, I have NEVER seen a LFS go through this much to ensure a fish's health prior to selling. I really wanted to buy a Rock Beauty Angel that they had, but he had just gotten slightly injured, so he was put into the QT tank. The character of this store rang through to me in that moment. Most stores I have been in would have sold me that nipped fish. This place woould not do something like that. It left me very impressed. This store will be getting A LOT of attention from me in the future! I was also quite impressed with the variety of fish and the rarity of some of the species that they had. Just an impressive store from a fish lovers perspective.

Corals: It appears that the coral section is being redone. One of the large coral tanks was empty (evidently this was the old softy coral tank). The corals were impressive to me as well, although since I switched to an aggressive tank, I have not been into that as much I must admit. I will say, I asked some prices on some mushroom rocks and felt those prices were quite reasonable. A rock with easily 25-30 mushrooms on it was only $40.

Now, Tropiquatics. I used to love this place (been in there a number of times), but I went in there this weekend and must have said to myself at least 10 times while I was in there, "what happened to this place?" The store smelled. It appeared dirty. I saw 3 tanks that had dead fish in them with other fish eating the dead fish. A number of tanks had fish that just looked as far from healthy as I would ever want to see (thin, laying in the corner, fins having white on them, etc). There was only one tank that was impressive and it was their display tank with those oversized fish (angel, puffer, and lion). A vast majority of their fish that were for sale were just in bad shape. I will admit that their orange shoulder tangs looked really good, but with the rest of the lot looking as poor as it did, I was not risking spending my money there. I left there empty handed and very dissapointed. I used to really like this place. Have I missed something are has this become common here? I hope that this was just a one time thing, but wow, this visit was very disappointing.

Spot on with this review I had the same exact experiences at both places. Tropiaquatics really has to do better. Reefwise will just get better!

I visited ReefWise yesterday as well for the first time and I have to agree 100% with your experience... not only is the QT system real cool, but the fish selection is ridiculous... There's no shortage of Ferrari grade wrasses here which is what I was looking for. I did not end up walking out with anything because I did not have $200 to drop for a rare fish.
I was with a SPS nut, and he spent plenty of time in the SPS tank and I myself noticed some nice pieces. Great store, no pushiness, and the owner was great. I'll be going back at some point and actually coming home with goodies.

I'm looking for some nice Mille/Acro's did reefwise have any i love that store they have a excellent fish selection.

Went to aquapros today myself and I'm kinda wondering what the fuss is about. The prices were good and I didn't get to talk to the one guy that was there so I didn't get that part of the experience, but the place was not very nice. some of the fish looked awful. They didn't have hardly any food, which was my reason for going.

I went back to reef wise. The softie tank sprung a leak so they repaired it and are going to do all aquacultured in that tank. Everything looks healthy and the place was full of people.

It was worth checking out aquapros so now I know, but I think I'll stick with reef wise and reefs plus.

Aquapros generally has stuff in stock. If you know you need a specific item just call ahead and Dave will get it within a day or two. I would much rather go to AP than go to reef wise. The attention to customers isn't always there at reefwise. Dave will give you attention which is why I will continue to back there and his prices are much better than at RW.

Dave didn't give us any attention while we were in there and I'm not calling ahead to order Rods.

+1 and on the 30 day process for QTing fish is bolognie on RW. They do a 6 day "QT" on their fish as far as the owner told me one of the last times I was there. As far as giving your money back on fish if they don't make it is straight out insulting to me. I had $150 fish die on me overnight and called first thing in the morning and I got the "I'll do the best I can do for you" talk. Went in and the best he could do for me was 10% off on a $100 fish. Don't get me wrong. The store is quite impressive but I will warn you, he will do anything to get money out of you. And yes he will sell you fish out of the QT system that same day if you ask.

How did you acclimate the fish.

I get a kick out of all this. Like its a sin for a store to be out to make money. Why would you open a store? The goodness of your heart to help out us poor reefers?

I doubt anyone will ever have the perfect store. So many variables in this. There will always be positives and negatives. You just need to weigh both and then decide if you want to go there again.

I will throw out my biggest positive and negative here for all 3

ReefWise

Nice big look down tanks for corals. Pretty decent selection.

Owner not very personable and many corals are browning out. Probably from lack of light or not selling them quick enough. When you ask when new coral is coming they never know. They probably want to train their workers so they try and provide the same customer experience. Some are really pushy and other are non existant.

AquaPros

Really resonable pricing and friendly personable owner.

Small selection and tiny place. I have seen more coral at peoples house when I am swapping frags.

Tropiquatics

They gave false information to me a few times when I did not know any better. The store is dirty and the livestock is terrible

Hrmm sorry cant think of anything good on these guys lol

I love reef wise. I find the owner Brain to very personable so long as he is not swapped. He has gone out of his way for me numerous times. I bought a bunch of aquacultured zoa from him a couple months ago and accidentally bought two of the same pieces. I called him up two days later and he let me exchange them. I had another frag die after 24hrs and he replaced it for me.

How did you acclimate the fish.

I acclimated for almost three hours since he sold it to me out of his "qt". This was around 10 at night after an event he had at the shop. Either way everyone is going to have their point of view. If you like it have a blast. In my part I had my run.
