I've been culturing nanocloropsis for several months, started from FAF culture disks and using FAF modified guillards fertilizer. I have followed the directions the best I can, and I get some pretty nice green phyto that splits and continues to grow. It seems to be working out ok.....but some of the reading I've done has me wondering.
1. How can I tell if it's been "contaminated"? (I know what contamination by rotifers looks like
)
2. When I split my phyto, sometimes I take out 2/3, and sometimes only 1/2 - then add more culture medium; if 2/3, I wait around 7 days to harvest, if 1/2 I only wait 3-4 days - Am I doing that right?
3. Should I be waiting until my phyto reaches a certain density (as measured by the density stick from FAF) to harvest?
4. Can nano by itself be sufficient for the purpose of raising clownfish, or would it be better to be supplementing with another type of microalgae?
I know most people buy instant algae, and I have been wrestling with whether or not I should. I may go that direction, but since I have the phyto, I'd like to keep it around a little longer, provided I'm indeed culturing useful phyto.
Thank you!
