A Fish Out of Water

I have a blonde naso that jumped out the tank this evening. It was on the floor for an estimated 15 minutes before it was found. My daughter heard a thud 15 minutes prior to finding it. She did not try putting it back in the tank for another 5 minutes. It was out of water for 20 minutes. The fish is now swimming in place but not roaming the tank as usual. I am curious what is the length of time anyone has witnessed, or heard of, a fish surviving out of water?. I am now hoping the fish survives the night.

I am sure he'll be fine...My Candy Hogfish has jumped numeroous times..the last time, I don't know how long he was out but he was barely breathing...I put him back in..he floated to the bottom:( He just layed there for quite awhile..he hid in the rocks and I wasn't sure he'd live but the next morning he was out and about!! I had to get the dreaded eggcrate after that jump;)

Wow, never seen a Tang jump:eek:

It survived the night. It is still hiding out behind the rocks. I have never had a tang jump before. I have had tangs in open top tanks for 7 years now without a carpet surfer. I wonder if fish are like humans when we are deprived of oxygen? Do they suffer brain damage?

My Hogfish is still the same....didn't suffer any long term damage

Good to hear he made it through the night!! He should be fine:rollface:

I have a midas blenny that jumped out and laid in a clump of salt creep for about five minutes before I found it. It survived & then jumped into my overflow, 3 times, he's still there!

Good luck!

My clown jumped out one night I didn't notice and I don't know how long he have been on floor but I would say 30 mins tops, when I tried to find him, he was no where to be found then I looked on floor there he was, he was not even moving his mouth then I quickly spooned him up and put him in a bowl of the water from the tank, he started to recover then in a half hour he looks better then I released him back in the tank and on next day he's back to his usual self.

From what i read naso tangs are known for their jumping abilities, though i never experience this myself.

I now think it has made a full recovery. It is now eating like a pig as usual.
Nice when there's a happy ending!
