A General Guide to Salt Mixes

Hey Billybeau1 any ETA on the New RC testing. Thinking of switching back to RC due to price and availability of H2ocean. I'm running low on H2ocean.

It really stinks about the high alk levels. I was planning on using Instant Ocean brand salts.

For most folks, I really do not think the alkalinity in the salt mix is very important. I know people agonize over it, but it doesn't really make sense to me for most situations. We add so much that the amount present in a water change will be quickly lost in the noise (IMO). :)

For example, I change 1% of the water daily.

Suppose that my tank runs at 2.5 meq/L (7 dKH) and I change it in with 4 meq/L (11 dKH).

That is adding the equivalent of 0.015 meq/L (0.04 dKH) per day.

In my normal top off of limewater, I'm adding about 0.8 meq/L (2.2 dKH) each day.

So I'm dosing about 50 times more with my dosing than the salt brings in. :)

That's a great point randy. Thanks. I was thinking about that, only the thought didn't process quiet as well as you said it.

Sorry, Reef Crystals has not changed. I thought I read earlier on that they had changed the formula.

It doesn't5 smell the same, that's for sure. But I've been using the bad batch stuff for quite a while, maybe that's the reason.

I have used a small bucket of this salt, as far as your main parameters goes its great cal, mag etc.,but I did find that at the bottom of the bucket there was sand look like beach sand , its probably the way they process the salt. Also when I wiped the bucket clean the cloth became brown?

Hope this helps

I'm on my 3rd bucket of H2 Ocean. I had been a RC user until I got to many bad buckets. Switched to TM Pro that I liked then my LFS switched to H2 Ocean. I can say that I agree with KSED observations. The H2 ocean leaves a little sediment in my brute and a slight brown slime on the pump, no where near as bad the RC was. I never had any of these issues with TM Pro. I was thinking of switching back to TM Pro but a new RC has my curiosity peaked.

How is the smell different?

The old stuff had a fresh smell to it when you first mixed it. Now that smell is not there.

I have a new bucket of RC not sure if the formula is different but the bucket picture has changed:) It does say on it "Now with more Calcium"
