A General Guide to Salt Mixes

why not just run the reactor on the whole system's water rather than just the makeup water?

I do run gfo on the system now and thats why im as low as I am. I was thinking about doing auto water changes now that I have the big holding tanks. Probably not really needed now that I think about it. Its just with being able to regen my GFO now Im thinking about using it everywhere I can:lol:

Just picked up 4 buckets of the new Seachem Salinity. Will not be using it for a couple weeks. I will post some test results but I usually only test Alk and Cal....

That would be good. Seachems track record for magnesium is usually pretty high so I would expect the same with the new stuff.

I just checked my Ca reading on a batch of Tropic Marin. Your results will 375ppm at 35ppt. I checked mine and got 450ppm at 35ppt. I used Elos

Does this seem high for regular Tropic Marin salt?

DB, a lot of factors here. Did you mix the bucket up real good before using ? How are you testing specific gravity ?

Those look like Pro numbers although I tested over a year ago, I don't see them adding more calcium to the standerd TM since many use it for fish only tanks. The TM Pro was formulated for reef tanks.

I would calibrate your refractometer and give the bucket a good shake and try it again. :)

Either way, 450 ppm calcium is not going to hurt a thing. What did you get for alkalinity ?

I got quite strange results when testing my Red Sea Coral Pro, Ca 480 ppm, Mg 1320 ppm and KH 14° at 35 psu. Calcium and magnesium was tested with Salifert kits, KH with a Fauna Marin kit and salinity with a refractometer. The KH test was repeated, twice, with a thorough reading of the instructions in between.

Any thoughts?

I suspect a bad kh test kit. No salt mix I've tested to date has alkalinity that high out of the bucket.

Maybe pick up a cheap API kh kit and compare results.

I'm curious, what does your tank test at for kh with the same kit ?

I see you are from Sweden so API might not be readily available to you. Just try another brand. Alk kits are pretty straight forward so you should be good with just about any brand for comparison sake.

I get 9 dKH right now after buffering up from 7 dKH one month ago.

If the true alkalinity out of the bucket is ~7 then my tank would be ~4,5 and ~3,5 one month ago if everything is nice and linear. Could SPS survive in under 4 dKH?

I guess that I have to buy a new kit.

I doubt it about the 4 dkh. I'd try another kit. :)

Go reefing with Reef Crystals by Instant Ocean. Or go reefing with Instant Ocean and supplement. I cannot see going with anything other than the best, the producer of Instant Ocean which is used exclusively for all the tanks at the largest aquarium in the U.S. and world, the Georgia's Shedd Aquarium?

Why mess with success?
