A great refugium lightbulb, IMHO!

Is there any danger to setting one of those bulbs without a glass between it and the water from salt spray, though very slight, does come up avery little bit from the overflow returns? It would be about 5 inches above the water surface. Thanks.

No problem at all. Mine are 4" off the water, and easy to wipe off. They do not get hot, and have proven to be an excellent bulb.

For those of you having trouble finding the bulbs, or just dont want to special order them, I found a bulb in WalMart the other day for 9$. Lights of America Sunlight Bulb, Model 2830 S. Color was listed as 6500K.

Rico I have bought the 5100k local look at the sku of the bulbs the 51k has it right in the sku on the bulb base.

clkwrk, are you saying that packaging is different but the sku is the same? I haven't been able to find the original packaging at my local HD.

4 pack of 19W = 75W Halogen PAR38

4 pack of 19W = 75W Halogen PAR38

Just went to HD and they had a pack of 4 for only $12. It looks like they might be discontinuing them. I am sure that they are not that price everywhere, but for those that live in IL it is a good deal.

Honestly, the bulbs are for growing macros, right? I don't think macros are really that picky, unlike zooxanthalae (whatever) in corals. 5100, 6500, it's all good baby!

The built in reflector of the originally suggested bulb is a bonus, but the fixture with a reflector is only about $8 anyway!

Last time I checked it was the same package same numbers on the bulb . I will check the next time I am there which will prolly be tomorrow.

Cool. I couldn't find any in my home depot in chandler and the sku did not work on their web site. I wonder if I go to their customer service desk and give them the sku # if they will be able to tell me if any of the other home depots have it in stock.

I had one in my sump but had an accident and it busted.

Home Depot doesn't carry the 5100K bulb, but they have lots of 2700K bulbs if you want those instead.

You can order the 5100K online via the links I included at the base of this webpage. http://www.melevsreef.com/fuge_bulb.html

You can use 6500K if you like as well. Those are harder to clean, as the coil gets covered with salt and diminishes the output. I ran a 6500K bulb for six months at a time, always replacing it at that point. Worked fine for 1.5 years. I got better growth from the 5100K bulb personally.

Get the 5100K bulb instead.

Of course, nuisance algae growing in the refugium is also okay, because it tends to not grow in the main display then.

Do you remove the red slime from your refugium? I only have a little growing but i was wondering if it spreads to the main tank?

Well after a water accident I lost my bulb. I went to home depot to purchase one today. I couldn't find the one with the sku of 774-265 on the bulb. However my old bulb had a sku of 744-265 and a Model EDXR-38-19. The new bulb that I purchsed has this model number on it so I would have to assume that it is the same bulb. They had about 6 left so I purchased two of them, looks like they are the last of the lot. Here is a picture of the packaging:

In my experience, if you have slime algae in the refugium it won't grow in the main tank too. I don't want any in my system at all, but if it is contained in the fuge, I can live with it.

I just bought the same bulb you're showing with the blue package and the quick start technology. IS this the same bulb Melev's is recommending for the refugium?

On the package, there is a phone number. Call them up with the model #, and ask them "what is this bulb's Kelvin rating?" I'm recommending a 5100K bulb. 2700K and 6500K work, but the 5100K worked better for me.
