A great refugium lightbulb, IMHO!

No need to be sorry. I've picked up things more basic than PAR, and isn't the constant learning a big part of what makes this hobby so great?

Just got one of these

I recently switched to the LOA 9266. White flood light from Home Depot with 6500K Compact Fluorescent looking bulb. I started having a ton of cyano growing in my fuge now. It almost appears like my Chaeto is shrinking. Still dark green but not growing very well at all. Anyone else experience this with this bulb?

I think that PAR with a number associated with it is also used to describe the shape of a flood type bulb. Very confusing.

I've been using the TCP 5100K bulb for a couple of months now and am very pleased with the chaeto growth. Recently I've noticed that when the light first turns on (I'm running a reverse photoperiod) it's rather dim, and it takes about a minute to reach its full intensity. Is this normal for a fluorescent bulb? Should I replace it (I have 2 more as backups)?

Where did you find that bulb? My Home Depot, Lowes, etc no longer carry the orginal bulb Mel wrote about or anything similar. I need to get a new one.

Thanks

Yes, mine do that as well.

Btw, I have a feeling most of you don't clean off the bulb too often. If you don't and it is covered with salt creep, you'll lose quite a bit of light. Turn off the bulb, let it cool off for 5 or 10 minutes, then wipe the glass down with a wet towel. Dry it well, screw it back in and turn it back on.

I just redid my lights over the refugium a few days ago. Here's a picture. I removed the metal clamp feature and secured each bulb to hooks screwed underneath the tank in the solid plywood platform.

Doesn't any store carry these anymore? It was a good deal when Home Depot or Lowes had them, but $9.50 to ship, I might just go back to a regular CF bulb and ballast set up.

No, they don't unfortunately. Other lighting suppliers might.

However, if you are part of a club, you might do a group order and get a case or two, spreading out shipping to $1 - $2 per person instead, and keep extras on hand.

I don't usually like to quote myself, but I was wondering if anyone had an answer to this question? Thanks!

Does anyone know of any 240 or 220 volt versions of these lights ? I am looking for one in Australia and can not seem to find any.

Yup, PARxx is a mogul shape/bulb type.

Hey guys, great thread! I was trying to find the light locally and i emailed TCP. This was their answer:

Gabriel,

Thank you for your interest in our product line. You may order product from Home Depot Supply (a sister-company of Home Depot retail stores). Their phone number is 1-800-431-3003. Please reference the TCP item number when ordering. You may also purchase most of our products at various on-line distributors, for example: www.goodmart.com, www.bulbman.com, etc... Most of the on-line distributors only sell by the case, but some do sell certain items individually. Ace Hardware, Orchard Supply, and True-Serve Hardware stores are another option. In most cases, if the store does not have the product in stock, they can order it directly from us. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

I mailed a catalog of all of the products we offer earlier today so you should be receiving it shortly.

Thank you!

I went with the 6500k readily available from Wal Mart. I couldnt' find a 5100k anywhere that didn't require shipping costs.
