A headsup...becareful using removers......

I recently started deveoping an algae problem..SPS losing color etc.. what else is new. I didn't realize that the TDS was getting too high in my make up water and top off. I changed out the filters, added a little more phosban and within a week it cleared up, but I lost some SPS due to bleaching and RTNing. I didn't add anything and I checked everything...temp, cal, Alk, Mag etc.. and all the #s are the same. Apparently the phosphate and nutriant levels must have dropped too fast and caused this.....so becareful when using these products....

sorry, Mike.

How long between when you added the GFO and your sps started dying? Was it right away or was the rtn etc delayed a few weeks?

thanks... it was about the third day and very sudden over night. One night everything was fine and the next morning, the damsels were having a feast on dead tissue and white from bleaching....effected mostly frags. Luckily all the well established colonies are hardy enough to endure it.
Again sorry to hear about what happen in your tank. How is it doing? I've been trying to keep track in your red slime remover thread......

I changed my gfo a few weeks before all these issues. I don't think that was part of the problem in my case. Was curious though.

I ended up losing almost all my sps, and most of my frogspawns, and a huge hammer. Sucks.

Yikes!!!! That's terrible seeing all of those dead corals in those buckets. Sorry you had to go through that.

Mike - Just curious....what type of GFO are you using? Do you have it in a reactor? Did you run it through the reactor to someplace outside the tank when you first added the media to get rid of all of the brown water?
Also, I wonder if changing the filters may have caused some type of problem. I usually run my new filters outside the tank into the drain for a few hours to break them in.

Justin..I think this was mentioned , but the problem with red slime remover is it can't distinguish between good and bad bacteria and wipes everything out which probably sent ammonia, nitrates, nitrites etc...levels through the roof..thats a terrible picture again sorry for your losses.

Chris..I use Phosban and always run it through the reactor into a bucket for a gallon or so to drain the brown water...same for the new filters to remove loose sediment etc...I added alittle more phosban than I normally do to combat the nutriant problem and I think it stripped the water to quickly......

Thanks Mike for the head up. That one of the things I really find fustrating about this hobby it's so unforgiving, the smallest change or screw up can cost you months of hard work and tons of money!

Yes you are correct Mike it removes alright. I used it in my 12 gal once ... it did the job. So to speak. Thank goodnes didnt have much to loose :)
