A host for my clowns...

This weekend I put a deposit down on a pair of black snowflake juveniles. They will be in QT for the next 4 weeks. Before they arrive I'd like to toss something in the tank they might host... soft coral... don't think i have the parameters yet for LPS.

If you were putting a coral in for a pair of occelaris in the hopes they might take up residence, what would it be?

I have nothing but a few mushrooms now (new 40g Long tank 1 month old)

My girl is using a large star polyp colony. You can buy any number of corals/anemones and there is no guarantee the clowns will use them as a host. Clowns are quirky. They may use a powerhead (I had one that did), or a corner of the tank, or a heater. There's no forcing a clown to use a host of your choosing.

I had luck with rhodactis straight ahead, but as said, no guaranty.

Clowns don't need a host to be happy. If you provide an artificial host they may or may not accept it. In the case of corals they usually damage or kill the coral they inhabit. Sometimes, like in the case of torch corals and frogspawn the jagged edges of the skeleton can catch and tear their fins... sometimes beyond repair. If you must provide a host, I would advise you to get your params stable, age the biofilter and after you see that a few corals are doing well, add a captive propagated BTA.

i'd put a leather coral in the tank if your not ready for an anemone. just look for one that looks similiar to an anemone. i have a toadstool i think it's called. it looks like a carpet anemone. my clowns love it, they host it just like they would the real thing.
