A little off the top please......

Well some of you may know I purchased Josh's 110g acrylic tank and although it was a nice tank the way it was. I really didn't care for the crack in back pane or the depth of it. Well long story short I wanted to use this tank to test out my acrylic working skills and this is what I have thus far. Hence the Title "A little off the top".

I used a Table saw, Sawzall and a friend. 20 minutes later I have a 75 gallon rimless! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I'm going to finish it off by taking it to work cleaning up the top with a mill so I can re brace it. Or maybe just put a couple acrylic strips just to keep the cost down and keep it from bowing out let me know what you guys think. If there are any acrylic guru's out there let me know what you think about my re bracing strategy.

Wow, an EXTREME TANK MAKEOVER!! LOL. Looks promising. If I kept it I was going to go shorter to make it a rimless frag tank. But on a side note, I would just do bracing across the top, 2 cross braces making it 3 bays, otherwise if you're cuts are not true, there will be small gaps between the tank and top plate which will cause the acrylic/glue to craze. Then just buff the rim out to a nice clean shine.
Oh, and save the overflow teeth for a guide to make it easier on ya.
I would also do the bracing last and buff out the tank first while its all open and easy access. Hope it turns out the way you want it to.

Well your off to a great start!!!!!!!!

Josh has alot of good points about keeping the overflow teeth for a pattern and the bracing.

Most of all I agree with polishing the tank before you re-brace it. I have never polished a tank before but I have done a few bike frames and misc bike parts. The less stuff in your way the easier it is to to a good job.

I can mill it to be perfectly flat across the top and euro brace it. but I think a sheet that size would cost more than what I paid for the tank lol. This is a learning experience and I am gonna try me best to get it polished a braced so it looks good and not some hack job. As to wether or not I set it up I have no clue. I think it would make a nice fish only. I could make it a reef but... I haven't decided yet. let me know what you guys think fowlr or reef?

Now thats a hard choice. I think it would look cool with a rock wall with coral and small fish. That is if you set it up against a wall. I would say fish only if you set it up to view from both sides

Take a look on the bay as I have picked up some crazy deals on some acylic. I have a lot of acrylic laying around. Some weld on 3 and 16. as well. I dont have anything thick enough. I have 1/4 sheet. And some small pieces of 3/8 1/2 and 2" but not long enough for a brace.

You could always call meyer plastics and see what kind of scraps they have laying around that are 1/2". They also sell weld on pretty cheap there too.

If Jessie doesn't have what you're looking for, I can set you up. I have an electric hand polisher and acrylic polish you can borrow. I used it when I buffed out that crazy 340 gallon tank I thought I could put in my house...what was I thinking. Anyway, it worked well.

That's awsome thanks Rob! I have a polisher I got from Josh. I also have some novus 123. I still want to get some 2000 grit or higher sanding discs along with some polishing stuff so I can get it looking good. Im thinking about taking the scrap from cutting the top and turning it into smaller frag racks and raffling them off at the future meetings. It really all depends on the magnets I get and how good I can make them look.

D&B Sales sells 2000 grit paper cheap. It works really well. In addition to the Novus, I also used rubbing compound. I used that after sanding and before the Novus.

Rob, what kind of rubbing compound did you use?

Josh, I was gonna use most the scrap for bracing strips that's why I asked if strips would be ok to use instead of a euro brace. What ever is left I will make some small frag racks so far im pretty stoked about this project.
