a little progress

Thanks all. Bill, I considered using that stuff but since my wood was the same type(red oak) I didn't think it would turn out like it did. I guess the plywood just takes the stain differently. I'll try and get it fixed by adding more stain to the lighter pieces. I guess worst case scenario is I could sand off all the stain and use a sealer to re-do it. But I hope it doesn't come to that.

the oak ply is funky when it comes to staining it. you gotta wipe it off quick, or leave it on the solid oak pieces a little longer. another coat the the lighter stuff should make it match up pretty close.

After playing with a couple scrap pieces I decided to try lightening up the oak ply first. I just took a little thinner on a rag and wiped down the ply pieces. It looks a lot closer now. I think its close enough that I can live with it. The darkness is now about the same but the solid oak has a slightly different shade. It actually kinda makes the columns stand out a bit more so I think it will work out ok.

The picture didn't turn out very well because of the flash but you can definitely see a difference over the pic from last night.

Thanks, its a 67 coupe. Its still gutted right now. Just finished replacing the floorpans and front torque boxes. I have pretty much abandoned working on it until I get the new tank set up though.

Cool! It looks like a fun project, are you going all original or are you modifying it at all?

The stand is looking awesome!! I can't wait to see this finished!

Thanks, right now the plan is to use the original 289 engine and transmission but will probably modify the steering, brakes, suspension, and a few other things. It will be mostly original from the outside view I suppose is a good way of putting it. Except I'm really thinking about grabber orange and black for the paint ;)

Well good, bad, or otherwise I think I'm calling it done for now. I put 2 coats of polyurethane on it so hopefully it will hold up a while. I'll build the doors later after I get things going. For now, I hope to get the stand and tank moved into the room and start building the sump. Here's the final stand pics:

I've measured the stand and it looks like 48" x 23" will be a good footprint for the sump. The height won't matter too much because the opening is about 30" high. Probably somewhere around 20". That would make it about a 95 gallon sump.

Thanks Michael.

A bit of a question... I'm possibly going to be moving the stand and tank into the room this weekend but would like to get the back painted/covered before then. What do you all normally use for the black background on the tank? Is it paint, a plastic background, window tint, something else? Any ideas?

I recommend a black material that has a tack to it from either AC or fins as both have it. You peel off a protective film to expose a removable emulsion, wet it down well with soapy water, hang it, and then use a credit card or plastic putty knife and smooth out the air bubbles. It then dries and sticks to the back. It can be removed later if you ever needed too. This stuff rocks and gives you that deep black or blue look (comes in both colors) and is smooth, unlike the crappy tape up kind of background.

Sounds like an adhesive vinyl that has a semi-perm adhesive on it. I'll have to remember that stuff, I've always just painted my tanks, but this might be a good choice too.

Originally I used the black film AC sells. Worked well before the move. Even came off with little effort when we needed it to. After the move, I used the stock window privacy film you by at HD or Lowes. Works great when you want visibility from the back. Both install very easily.

I don't remember what it is called, but if you go into AC or Fins and tell them what you want they will show you. I have never seen it carried by any online vendor BTW.

Well, another big step happened this weekend. Got the stand and tank moved inside after putting the background on. I got that stuff you guys mentioned from the Critter and it worked great. Man this thing was heavy for 2 people!!!

Thats my standard 55g tank and stand in the corner for size reference. That tank will either be taken down or moved somewhere else.

Thanks guys. It definitely makes the 55 look tiny. I think the height makes a big difference. The top rim of the tank is right at eye level and I think I'm going to really enjoy it being that way.
