A new calcium source?

Has anyone used a ice Cacl ice melter from Ace hardware called Qik Joe Ice Melt by Milazzo industries? According to their techs it is 92 -96% Cacl, 2% Pottasium chloride, and the rest is H2O. I hope this stuff is ok as it is only $31.00 for 50 lbs!!! Being a greenhouse coral farmer I go thru the good Doctor's 2 part mix pretty quick :)

Thanks,
Joshua

The problem with such products is knowing what impurities are in it, and whether it is pure enough. The purity labels that you quoted are not sufficient to make such a judgement.

I'd guess it may be repackaged material from Dow, in which case it would be Ok for boosting a salt mix like Instant Ocean, but not for regular supplementation.

If you use enough of it in your coral farm, it may be worth the buck for you to run the appropriate tests on it for contaminants. Another possibility exists that different batches produce different possible contaminates.

As Randy mentioned, QuikJoe is a Dow product. Their factory, Milazzo Industries, is only a few miles from my house. If you can find some old stock (pre 2007) it's probably the good stuff with the low bromide.

I have been using Qik Joe Ice Melt heavily for a little over a year in my reef with no issues. The stuff I got is definitely old DOW.
