A New Cirrhilabrus described

"When will we see a Cirrhilabrus tanaka, Tanaka's Fairy Wrasse?"
You will see that when someone names one after H Tanaka.
It is not cosidered proper to name a fish after yourself when you are the one describing it. But you can 'discover' the fish and the person who describe's can name it after you.

Tanaka, the pics were taken by the owner of my local LFS(he deserves the credit for the pics). I agree it takes some patience to get a picture of them flashing.

After much consideration, I decided to purchase one of the four that my LFS had in stock. I did manage to get first pick on the four that he has available.
The one I had chosen has the most striking color, its tail is a very metallic blue.

Saltywet, mine was the same way, he spent a few hours moving about the crevices and was out socializing in no time, the only fish giving him a rough go is my cleaner wrasse(someone new to clean I guess)

Here are a couple of pics

Thanks all guys,

The pics are great and interesting that shows some dark areas in the individual.

The describer does not name a fish after his name. I asked Dr. Jack Randall to name it naokoae, although he already has poroposed another name.

Stacy,

Gorgeous fairy wrasse! Keep us posted on how the wrasse does for you and if it maintains the intense yellow color in abscence of females.

Stacey,

Funny you mention that, my cleaner wrasse is doing the same thing.
It is picking on the new guy...I guess. But the wrasse doesn't mind and doesn't hide.

I would love to get one or two Naoko's Fairy Wrasse but I'm still new to keeping wrasse and wondering if it can coexist with Australia Scott's Fairy Wrasse (male & female not a true pair yet) and Australia Harlequin Tusk?

I will be getting two in next week and after quarantine they will be introduced to the Scott's Fairy pair and the Harlequin Tusk. Crossing my fingers they will be fine.

Scott's fairy wrasses, especially females, are high territorial and aggressive. I had to remove a pair from one of my tanks.

Steve,

Thanks for the heads up. I only had the Scott's Fairy two weeks ago and got them as individuals and not as a pair with the female being 2.5" and the male about 5". The Scott's are currently in a 75QT and after the Naoko's Fairy wrasses (will be in a 40 QT for couple of weeks) then they will be introduced simultaneously into the 125. The Harlequin Tusk is 5 5/8". Hope this will work out but if not then I'll move the Naoko's.

My original plan was to get one Naoko's Fairy and a Hooded Fairy but I was afraid they will lose their colors and opted to get 2 Naoko's now and 2 Hooded Fairy down the road.

Kevin

Kevin, the Naoko's and Hooded will not lose coloration. The Scott's may even with a female, and for sure without one. Do you have a PAIR (!) of Naoko's? I have no idea how two males will get on.

Steve, it's not a pair. As far as I know it's only been male that are coming in and I haven't come across any female yet. As far as reading it's been mentioned they are sociable and a few members here are keeping 2. I'll have plenty of rocks and hope they will get along.

Good to know that the Hooded & Naoko's Fairy will not lose their color.

here he is looking for info on them :D

Hi :)
i am the lucky owner of this fish :D and i thought id share my experience with you...
i have had this fish 3 weeks now and its currently in my QT, it was initially in there with a rainfords goby but i thought i would try and see how well it mixed with another fairy as my main tank has quite a few fairy wrasses, given that it very closely related to the C. rubriventralis i thought i would remove my rubriventralis from my sump and place it in with the C. naokoae.
For anyone experienced with adding a fairy to an existing tank that has a fairy (or 6) there is usually some posturing for a day but after a couple of days this usually goes away, what happened with this pairing was something slightly different but very very special...
during the day the pair get along fine with no aggression at all and thenlate afternoon the naokoae goes into display mode, this results in the rear upper half of its body turning from a mottled black/red colour to a bright white, the area on its face above its top lip also turns white while its tail turns turquoise, un fortunatly i am unable to load any pics of this so all i can do is to provide some links to my tank thread on the UK forum i use http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=297445&page=17 (moderators, please accept my apologies if this is against the rules and feel free to delete the link but i would like to share this spectacular event with everyone else)
i will keep you informed of how things progress with this wonderful fish :)
