I woke up today to find the floor around the aquarium soaked. After the initial freak out, I set in to find the problem. Luckily, I had put off sunday maintenance so the top off reservoir was nearly empty, no salinity issues.
I turned the return and skimmer off. Checked all connections, nothing wet. How the heck did this water get on the floor. I figured the sump had to be leaking. I marked the level of the sump with a sharpie and waited two hours. Level still the same.
But again, I had put off sunday maintenance. The filter sock was disgusting. As they get more full, they start to retain water towards the bottom, and water starts to flow closer and closer to the top. My filter sock rests against two sides of the sump, with the top actually above the rim of the sump. Water started to escape through the top of the filter sock over the sides of the sump.
Cue massive gunk. Cue seepage. Cue another mistake.

I had not even considered this, so I figure I'd put it out there in case any of you were in the same spot without knowing it.
