a new point of failure, word of warning

I woke up today to find the floor around the aquarium soaked. After the initial freak out, I set in to find the problem. Luckily, I had put off sunday maintenance so the top off reservoir was nearly empty, no salinity issues.

I turned the return and skimmer off. Checked all connections, nothing wet. How the heck did this water get on the floor. I figured the sump had to be leaking. I marked the level of the sump with a sharpie and waited two hours. Level still the same.

But again, I had put off sunday maintenance. The filter sock was disgusting. As they get more full, they start to retain water towards the bottom, and water starts to flow closer and closer to the top. My filter sock rests against two sides of the sump, with the top actually above the rim of the sump. Water started to escape through the top of the filter sock over the sides of the sump.

Cue massive gunk. Cue seepage. Cue another mistake.

I had not even considered this, so I figure I'd put it out there in case any of you were in the same spot without knowing it.

I have mine in the middle so if it starts to overflow its not a problem. But good thread. Most people have it on the border.

I had this same thing ALMOST happen to me, Chuck. I was extremely fortunate and looked down to see the water about 1/8" from the top of my filter sock! Freaked me out a bit.

Was there any damage done to your flooring?

Brandon

Nah, its a concrete slab. Maybe there is damage, but I hope not. I'm not even sure how I could tell, honestly. Just some crappy wet carpet which we will have to replace when we sell anyway (due to other previous aquarium mistakes :p).

Nah, Not to worry, Concrete Is tough!! I used to have It happen all the time and It hurt only the carpet. Now when It happens It"s already In a concrete floor room.

Hey, consider yourself lucky it was only some Saltwater. I did a water change on Monday morning and everything appeared to be fine. Got done with everything and noticed some pooling water around my utility sink in my fish room. Checked for spills or plumbing leaks and found nothing. Then, I looked at my sump pump pit... it was overflowing. The water was raw sewage! Great way to start off the week. All in all, not too much damage, but it sucked none the less.
