a new setup Q

I am wanting to setup a new mantis tank. I have a eclipse 12 with a 32 watt retrofit light. What else will I need? I am thinking an aqua c remora skimmer. Is a skimmer all I need, or is it even needed? I also have a small hob filter. Should I use it as a refuigm or mechanical filter or not at all? Also what mantis would be good for a 12 gal tank? Thanks for any replies.

I think that with a decent amout of live rock and one or two HOB filters (rated for at least twice the actual amount of gallons) would be fine for a hardy species of mantid. For a species that is prone to shell disease I would spring for a skimmer and/or refugium to be on the safe side. Im not 100% sure how sound this advice is, but if im wrong im sure someone will hollar

I've kept mine in one foot cubes with only a hob filter and a couple of kg's of live rock in each tank for over a year now.

1x G. Graphurus 1x G. Smithii

I just make sure I remove any un-eaten food as soon as i see it and change 25% of water once a fortnight .

They're doing quite well, they very active, their coloration is great, and one's just finished it's second molt since it's been living in this setup.

I was contemplating skimming the tanks but imo it's nor necessary for the setup I have.

My guys are only medium sized though (both aprox 3") I guess the larger species would create more waste so would probably need a skimmer and more filtration.
