I wonder if I did the right thing I basically took out all the caps, idaho grape, seng le cap, orange cap and the orange digi. In favor of acropora. It took about 6 hours. Removed a lot of gravel, washed rocks in tank water and used a lot of epoxy and super glue gel. Please give some thumbs up I have mixed thoughts on it.

That was a good tip davenbass regarding I phone. I just have to make the video with the camera horizontal. In my defense it is a new 4s. I really do not know much about it yet.

I think the left side still needs some more colonies and the left well possibly redo on spring break. I also want to point out my oregon tort, yes it has been growing from a 3/4 frag to a 2.5 inch encrusted base. Red Planet is a easy grower and quick. It is also interesting how the corals brown out just by moving them in the tank.

Big improvement! Those monti caps were a little large and crowding the tank IMO. Looks great now!

I am doing the same thing currently and for the exact same reason: Montiporas. The caps grow like weeds and soon block the light from everything below it while the encrusting ones do what they say they do...encrust..no matter what may be placed near it.

So yeah, it may be a definite setback but a year from now, I'm sure I'll be glad that I did it.

Oh, and no more Monti's for me either.

Tank looks great either way.
Your acros are gonna like the extra flow and light.
It's gonna grow in and be packed in no time.
You must have spent some hours on that remodel. Takes a lot of time to do that stuff doesn't it?

Never a fan of plating nor encrusting montis for the reasons you mentioned. But I knew that without even trying them based on the pics I have seen. I do have a small digitata and setosa (a slow grower), that's as far I can go. I do have a tiny acropora efflorescens, it is a slow grower and it is in the lower third of the tank where it won't shade anything under it if it grows.
BTW, nice size colonies you got there toothman.

If I feel in the reefing mood I will redo the right side tomorrow. I really like the way the left looks and looks like it has potential. It is the 3rd time I have remodeled the tank.

What I can say is: Each time I take more rock out in favor of more open water space for acros to eventually grow in. A more open look with larger corals is what I am looking for.

Also I am more comfortable just doing acropora period, especially torts and deep water acros. Sure wish I picked up a red dragon frag, I had a chance with my last order. oops.

How's that putty you used to mount your acros doing ?

I used some to mount a baseball sized ultimates rainbow prostrada
And it rtn'd on me as did a 4 others
