It's not rude if it is done with some tact.

That being said isn't the point of this site to have a discussion. Every single question has and answer somewhere. Should we just archieve the entire site and not allow questions becuase they have already been asked?

I think the point is being missed here. I'm not speaking of every question that has ever been ask on RC, I'm speaking of a handful of questions which are ask weekly and sometimes daily. Of course we want to promote discussion and interaction, and that can still take place once the OP does the search or follows the link provided and then comes back with a discussion on the topic and now he/she has a measured understanding of the question originally ask. This in and of itself promotes discussion.

This poll will do wonders as it is getting the word out that the search option does exist.

I used to frequent another forum that was extremely popular, and had the same dilema. The members there never hesitated to suggest the search function. Well, what eventually happened was, when you tried to search for something, you would find the exact question that you needed an answer for. The responce to that question was "use the search function".

I don't post much, because almost every question I have can be answered by searching. Either here, google, another forum. Most of my posts are to buy/sell or identify a new creature. But if everyone was like me, we wouldn't be able to find the answers by searching.

Lastly, as time passes, and technology evolves, the same question asked multiple times will yeild various answers, and contain numerous ways/opinions, from several users, to handle different circumstances.

my two cents are..
people join this forum to learn and ask questions. to find where their answers may be. soooo whether you choose to answer their question or point them in the right direction. still helps them on finding out what they need to know.

its not rude to ask for someone to search on here for an answer before posting. if their question is too specific to be answered then by all means post away. but for me when i tried to use the search it doesnt work well, this is when i tried to use it and i havent used it in forever. they might have fixed it but when i tried to search funcion it wasnt useful.
i myself try to do my homework before i post. some might be to impatient to do this, but i learn better thru doing it rather than someone doing it for me.
