he has been with me 7 years and is a tough and wiley dude.due to a house disaster/reconstruction i have done a total rebuild and am going heavy on coral this time. he is well fed and was hoping i could keep him but it is not to be. i am working on a nice new home for him in a big tank. the point was to avoid the same issues should i purchase a pair of potters which i would like to do...so i guess you could say i'm doing some research before i purchase them..what i find a shame and perplexing is your attitude/jumping to conclusions
The way you worded it was he ate your coral so into the sump he went. How is that to be construed as anything but haphazard husbandry?
But I do apologize for jumping all over you like that. I was out of line.
If an angel is going to munch on coral, brains are likely to be the first coral on the menu for many angels. Along with any similar looking fleshy coral, scolies, acans, fox coral etc. If you can generalize, the safest are the argi's. You must have a huge tank to have a 7 year old asfur and if this new tank is an upgrade, it seems like a male argi with a harem could be considered.
But what I always tell people is that if your corals are your first priority, angels may not be for you. I don't know about the larger angels, but dwarf angels are very hard to catch if you need to do it in a hurry (which is probably why they are so often drugged in the wild.)
Any Centropyge is likely to wind up nipping coral if practically all the grazing area is covered with coral - after all grazing is how they spend the day. So if that's the kind of tank you plan - maybe not a good idea.
If we're talking a pretty big tank, you might want to consider the Genicanthus group.
