A quick update...

Hey folks,

I haven't been here in a while and I wanted to give you all an update on my tank. So it's been about 6 weeks or so since I set up my 28 gallon tank. I'm not sure if you remember but I had some damsels in there that many had suggest I remove, well that is what I did this weekend. I have 30 pounds of live rock and in order to get those evasive little guys out of the I had to remove all the rock...:( which was a pain. Now I'm left with two fish, I have a Blue Tang and a small clown fish. Other inhabitants include an Arrow Crab that keeps growing, cleaner shrimp and an army of snails. I also finally set up my MH light so I'm looking forward to eventually getting into corrals and other fun stuff. I'm taking my time, still testing my water on a weekly basis, call me paranoid I guess. The gravity of the water as of yesterday, I believe is at 1.025 and the nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, etc. look good.

I have an Aqua C Remora skimmer and an Emperor 280 filter and I seem to be getting these microbubles that rise up from the rock...is this normal?

I will take some pics tonight and post them up. Anyone have any suggestions? While at the fish store yesterday I saw a nice looking fish that I was told is pretty dosile and hardy. The lady said is was a damsel but it didn't look like one. I think it was called a Bengai Cardinal...or something like that. What's the story on this fish, the fish store lady said it would go fine with my tang and clownfish.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Umm, remove the tang. Tangs are sensitive fish which generally require a mature tank with about 100 more gallons than you have. I believe hippos tangs reach 9 or 10 inches and they like to have swimming room. Banggai cardinals are nice fish but I think tank bred are best as they are prone to sickness, maybe someone who keeps them can give more info. Also that Arrow Crab gets pretty large, they are known to eat fish occansionally, mine only dined on hermits.

Testing your water weekly is not being paranoid - it's very smart :) I test mine at least that often, if not more depending on what it is for. Your going to want to dump the Emperor 280, or at least remove the wheel and keep the filter pad very clean. Many do not have luck with wet/dry with salt - I know that I didn't. You'll never be able to keep your nitrates under control. You have plenty of live rock to take care of that process for you. The skimmer is great too for that size tank. Actually now that I think about - you don't need that filter at all. Just keep your water changes up.
