A recent visit to 6meter Pieter

I'm unable to find the past thread, so I'm posting these pics for now from a recent visit to Pieters tank, and many thanks to Pieter for being such a gracious host. I'm a big fan of the new rockwork, it looks great already and really look forward to watching the tank mature over the next few years and fish selections. While there, the filter room was under expansion so looking forward to seeing that next time around as well.

new rockwork has lots of potential..btw what happened to former livestocks..specially that achilles, which was the first inhabitant...?
moreover is there any thread of your 20000 gallons....?

He lost all his fish when he tore his tank down to re-do the rock from what I was told by a source in that part of the world. My understanding was it was an Ich outbreak.

Personally, I liked the other tank better, but only time will tell. Pieters tank has always been in my top 3 if not my #1, so im very excited to finally see some pictures and hopefully we can be kept updated on the progress!!!

This is still one of my all time favourites. I personally like the old setup better, looked more natural. He tore down the whole tank for this look which was not worth it. Ok also very sad to loose all the fish you had for so many years. People are going for the more bonsai type looking tanks but the reef dont look like that at all. Check out Steve Weast tank, now thats a reef tank.

wow now that was a big loss i rmb how packed the tank was with fish now looks totally empty. i also liked the old tank alot better maybe because it was more mature as this one grows out maybe it would turn out just as nice

I think that everyone will agree that his old tank was incredible.

This one looks like it will be also.

I like how the rock work is elevated off the sand and once the corals grow in it will give another dimension to where the fish swim and hang like in pictures 2 and 3.

I have always admired Pieter van Suijlekom's amazing reef tank (emphasis added). I like the new design/layout. According to a recent Coral magazine interview, van Suijlekom's monster reef tank was in operation for five years before he decided to break it down to avoid "old tank syndrome." I believe the back pane of the new design was fitted with a blue acrylic background as well, which looks fantastic!

Thanks for sharing pictures from your visit, Joe!

I'm sorry I to hear about what happened to all his livestock. His tank looked so realistic before, I just think it looks so empty and barren now. I am sure it will once be honored and returned to it's former glory, albeit in a new look. Still from this....

to picture on first post is no comparison....sorry for the losses pieter.:(

Well, you guys need to realize you are basically comparing a fresh tank to a very mature tank. Once all these corals grow to larger sizes, I think this setup is going to be stunning, and should actually mask most of the rockwork with tables and overhangs.

If I remember the article correctly, he wanted to change to this because he wanted to give his corals the ability to grow to larger colonies, and still have room for his fish to swim, he was running out of room. This should allow him a longer time without having to do it again. I also really love the schools of cardinals.

Thanks for the photo's Joe, you live a really tough life traveling to all these famous tanks and being given the red carpet treatment. :D

Joe. Thank you for posting.
Pieter. Really sorry for the loss.
But your tank is always my inspiration.
By the way, beautiful rockwork.

Yeah, I've sculpted a tough life for myself sometimes ;)

Before we got there, Pieter was telling us about how its just a new set up, with some rock pillars and a few corals... the tank was far beyond that, but as a obsessive tank owner myself, I can certainly relate as I'm sure Pieter already knows what he wants the tank to look like and has that image in his head :-)

The tank and rockwork looks tremendous for just being set up with rock and existing corals. How the base rock looks really is insignificant as once the corals grow in, the rock disappears.

We discussed blue vs. black backgrounds and the merits of both as well. I'm lean towards a black background which is also removable for ease of cleaning, or having two sets of backgrounds and simply swapping clean for dirty backgrounds.

I'm most excited about the current and future fish selection.
The previous set up was a mature tank, so no real comparsions can be drawn at this time. The tank looks much larger with the new layout. There is no doubt this time around the tank will mature nicely with a dynamic fish selection, a selection that will be unlike any other tank out there, setting a new level of excellence yet to be seen.

Justjoe i have often admired this and your huge aquarium from the forum boards, one day i would love to see both in the flesh , thanks for posting!!!

I tried posting them to RC but it wasn't auto adjusting image sizes, and some of the pics showed up too big on the RC page?

Regarding posting pics from the RC site, can anyone assist on how to get the proper sized pics? Do they have to be sized prior to uploading them to the RC site so they fit properly fit on the screen? thanks, Joe
