A Red Fish - Finally!

First, a quick premise. Since before we even had our first tank setup, circa January 05, my mom has wanted a red fish. She pretty much didnt care exactly what fish, it just needed to be a red fish, for color and flare to the tank. We have the blue damsels, the brownish red saddleback clown, large yellow foxface, and the powder brown tang, but still no red. We have tried, though corals and inverts, to fulfill the red quota, but I'll admit, we were lacking.

One day, my girlfriend and I were doing our rounds at the local fish stores, and in one of the tanks I saw this very pretty red 'flasher wrasse'. It was a nice deep color. It was also a bit pricey compared to the amount we've spent on the other fish ($50) so I decided it was best to call my mom and fly the idea by her. She really wanted a red fish, but for $50, she was going to pass. If it wasnt $50, I'd have sprung for it myself, and just sucked the cost up and worked a few extra (ok, quite a few) hours at work. So we came home, and started doing some routine fragging and such and I decided to show a picture to my mom. She still wanted the fish, but didnt want to spend the $50. On another trip to a different LFS that afternoon, I remembered - we had some money saved from selling frags! Immediately I called and flat out told her I was buying the fish. She wasnt happy...

... until I returned home with this:

Needless to say, she's quite content with the purchase and happy that I 'convinced' her to budge.

By the way - capturing that fish on camera was MUCH easier than I anticipated. I have a hard time capturing the damsels and tang from time to time, but this fish just seems to want to be photographed.

Unfortunately, I have to report that Red Fish jumped. We're still not entirely sure how, because we have relatively tight fitting eggcrate tops. :( I picked up some clear mesh from a local guy that I'm going to be using to make an even tighter fitting top and then we'll consider another one.

But the point still stands, it was an absolutely gorgeous fish. If/when we get another one, I'm considering getting two or three females as well.

Thanks! Thats one of the only shots I've been able to use my flash correctly to capture a fish in motion without washing everything else out or causing a hot spot.

I did pick up some screening for my tank to replace the eggcrate, and also fit into the tighter corners better to eliminate any gaps, and eventually, we will most likely get another one.
