A reef bathtub?

Is it possible for me to have a reef bath tub?

I would clean out the bathtub with vinegar and give it an nice scrub down, but is it possible?

I would pump out the water with a submerisble pump into a canister filter and put heater air stones power heads in there.

Possible?

I guess it's possible, why do you want to do it? Do you want to take a bath with the fishes? Might make a good sump...

... not to mention the displacement issue when you get in. You're going to have to keep it shallow, and soap/shampoo might not be a good idea.

hmm, I think the drain could rust on you too..

You'd have a built in drain. The surface would have to be still to see into it. Might be cool. It might be similar to a setup at the GA Aquarium which had anemones right on the surface. Maybe similar to a tidepool. Go for it!

One plus would be when doing water changes. Just pull the drain and start dumping new water in. I say go for it, I might fill up my shower tonight and make a huge reef tank.

Can I use my washer for a reef tank? I would of course wash it out well with vinegar first. Plus I think the spin cycle would give pretty good flow. I was thinking of using my dryer as a sump...

I wouldnt take a shower with it lol.

Im just one man in a big house.

I know that'd be a lil wierd on the side to have a reef in your tub but I want to do something other then dropping balls on another reef tank.

My drain and my lotch to stop it from draining is metal i think would it allow copper to leach in?

I would hook up the shower head to some RO water and pressure wash for a water change =P

Good idea on the drain when doing water change also.

I think it would work and wouldnt even be that expensive.

Its only about 55 gallons and makign a sump for the tub isnt hard at all.

The only problem is lighting.

I think it would be super cool to turn all kinds of things into reef tanks! I have been walking around looking at all the possibilities! I think I will start with my kitchen sink and eventually work my way up to the washer dryer. Just looked over and saw the microwave...hmmmm.

The sink gives me a good idea, I have a pretty big sink thats split up inbetween. I could make a sump on one side, and the main tank on the other.

So the sump water would overflow into the lower tank water.

Thats not too bad.

Nice.

In all seriousness though, I have a friend who converted his bathtub into a turtle pond. But that is much easier to do as turtles do not need much filtration. They breathe the air as well do of course. It was hard enough to maintain and keep clean and nice looking. I couldn't imagine a reef! But I think if you want to do it, go for it! Why not right?

This guy still used his bathroom like normal because his bathroom also had a separate shower. It was VERY weird though using his toilet and having a bunch of big snapping turtles staring at you.

C'mon I'm not the only one to QT a fish in the tub am I?

IME the drain will leak so you will need to make accomadations. Those plugs aren't meant for long term holding.

If you can replace the drain so it is not metal for long term use that would be wise IMO.

Good Luck.

Pics!

Mods, can you kill this thread please?

Why?

No one is out of hand here. Whats the deal? We are discussing a reef bathtub.

I know what the problem might be though...You keep clicking on a thread that you don't like and reading it. Heres a tip that may help. If you don't click on the thread, you don't have to read it and therefore waste your time and end up asking for it to be closed for no apparent reason. :)

Hater :P

It's a legitamte question IMO. Sorry some of us are obsessed ad have problems. We admitt it. There is no RA, so let's move one. I have actually used the tub in a pinch. I think this could be helpful to others, especially my wife who thought I was nuts at the time.
