A Reef in the Sky

-Why K depletion with needle wheel skimmer ?
due to better skimming performances ?
or only in combination with the zeo system ?

greetingzz tntneon :)

This is how it was explained to me on the zeo forum

"What we know is that K+ becomes depleted in very low nutrient systems, including non-ZEOvit systems. This seems not to occur in traditional nutrient systems. We know that using zeolite filtration w/o a skimmer causes a very minimal loss of K+....in Germany a few yrs. back, Lars Sebrallas conducted this controlled study,[sorry no link] using 2ltrs. zeolites on his 200g plus system for 47 days, with the miniscule K+ loss at 2.4mg & his actual Kalium reading was 380mg, at the end of 47 days. We know from experience that venturi/beckett skimmers are 'plankton-friendly' with no significant loss of K+ with wkly WC's with a NSW level K+ saltmix. Practical experience shows this is not the case with 'wheel-skimmers', as K+ is decreased, even with 380ppm K+ saltmix WC's. Again this is most apparent in ULNS, like ZEOvit, but can occur in non-zeo-systems. Now to what we don't know. This is therorectical, as I am aware of studies...Is the bacterial-complexes consuming the K+, along with nutrients & being skimmed out?...more so with 'wheel-skimmers'? This might explain, with the zeolite systems hosting a higher density of bacteria than a conventional reeftank, the excessive loss of K+, as more bacteria would be in the skimmate[wheel-skimmers>venturi-skimmers]. Of course all this would be compounded by using a low K+ saltmix for WC's. "

Andrew,

I'm not sure where it is on this 42 page thread, but could you post your zeovit dosing schedule? What your dosing and amounts. Also if you are dosing any non zeo products as well.

thanks,
John

Very Nice Build!!! I can definately tell you put alot of thought into it. How long were you planning before you started this build?

thx for the tip JG1  ,
gonna look at local internet stores if they have them.

+1 for the pictures :)

Very nice love the colours and layout of your system:thumbsup:Just wondering what camera did you use on the last vid you shot by the way the vid is pure quality...

I think Andrew is a little busy studying right now............good luck big fella! :celeb3::reading::celeb3::reading:

I love your Korallen Zucht aragonite substrate. Wish I could get it in the U.S. or Canada. Looks way better than Carib Sea special reef grade.

Hi guys, sorry that I haven't been online... last month has been busy. Will attempt to catch up on the Pm's too.

A little OCD are we Andrew? haha

What a year it's been man! Did you ever dream you'd have a tank this nice? And after only one year! You my friend have the Midas touch.
lol... maybe! Thanks for the kind words Clint. It has been a pleasure sharing the experience.

Hi andrew, not sure if you can help me. I'll be in hkg for afew nights and would like to know if you know any LFS at the Gold fish market that carries ceramic frag plugs.

If not do you know any LFS in SFO area that carries something similar to Boston frag plugs.

jeremy
Hi Jeremy, I understand my reply is very late but if you need to know any further information send me a PM. Sorry.

Andrew...

I sure hope you and your family (and your beautiful tank of course) are okay after the earthquake! Please let us all know that you're safe when you have access to the internet.

-Chad

Whoops... looks like I'm geographically challenged (I thought Hong Kong was closer to Japan than it is). I sure hope Hong Kong wasn't affected by any tsunamis. Luckily it doesn't look like you were affected by the actual earthquake itself.

A quick shout-out to our Japanese Reefers out there... everyone say a little prayer for those guys. It looks pretty bad (the understatement of the day).

Sorry for the tangent.

-Chad
Thanks for the thoughts Chad... it certainly shocked the world. We did suffer some internet problems for a few hours but all was okay.

Drew, just finished reading the entire thread. Took me like four hours. Sorry if I missed it, but can you tell us more about the man behind all this? Like, where are you from, where do work that allows you to travel, wife and kids? How about some pics?
Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed the read. I see fishypets has taken care of your questions

I'll handle this question.

He is a freight pilot by trade, super-model by hobby. His wife is also a super-model.. No kids yet, but loves his cat. See Tom Cruise only taller if you want pics.:beachbum:
lol... fantastic!

I pray that your family and stunning tank ok after the massive earthquake. Im following the news closely and this quake was a bad one which have left millions without homes. Its going to take years to rebuild again and going to cost billions.
Thanks... all good here

Hong Kong is like 1000 miles from the quake in Japan.
Plus a country called Taiwan separates us so no Tsunami here

I've personally always found that a sandbed of a larger grain size is much harder to keep a pristine white, they seemingly always fade to a bone/tan. As you mentioned, detritus is also an issue... I'm convinced there's correlation between the two. Of the sands I've used, Caribsea Bahamas Oolite definitely seemed to respond the best to not shifting colour. Being smaller it does take a while to bed down... but once it does it stays put very well. If the KZ remedies don't pay off, might be worth mixing some into your bed?

As for the KZ stuff, what ones are you trying?
I agree with you. The larger the grain, the more you notice the colour change. I was initially happy with KZ however due to the fact I didn't get snails for the sand bed for quite some time plus didn't vacuum the sand I feel this contributed to the change in colour. The zeovit products I used (Zeozym and Bio Mate) to clean the sand certainly worked however it was too late... the sand was already stained.

I have elected to go with a new sand. More details on that shortly.

O, mistake dont know why I was thinking he was in Japan. Speed reading does this.
okay... no worries

a real work of art,congrats
Thank you very much

I've just spent hours reading this thread from start to finish, and have to say this is an incredible tank Andrew - amazing stuff!

I'm also in hk, and have been out of the hobby for a few years, and stumbled across this the other day as I'm keen on building a tank later in the year- your tank has made me want to get started even sooner!

Would be keen to find out who your tank builder is- am heading up to mongkok on Sunday to window shop..

Will keep a close eye on the thread, again, awesome work!
Hi there... great to hear from you. Send me PM sometime to catch up in the fish street. I can recommend the good shops.

hi,
You have the best aquarium that has been seen, congrats!
I have been before 2006 in Hong Kong very nice, would love to come and watch live on your tanks, but living too long.

Can I send you some questions about your produse where have you bought !
PM sent. Thanks

Awesome. I watch your three part videos at least once a week. Coll, clean and perfect.
Thanks you very much. Glad you like them.

Do you have any problems maintaining potassium levels?

I checked my K levels about two weeks ago and I was low 200's. 750ml of K-Strong added since and I'm only up to 330ppm.

They tell me on the zeo forum this is because of my skimmer. You're running a needle wheel skimmer also, thats why I ask
Hi John, I rarely test my potassium levels however I just recently purchased some K-Balance and have got my hands on the new red sea potassium test kit. Will start to monitor it more closely.

Yes I was following your thread on zeovit... it does sound strange that you had to add so much and still got a minimal rise in potassium.

This is a question for the experts... I can't really comment.

Thanks for that John... very interesting.

Hi John, I think it is on page 40 but not sure. I don't dose anything else. Will give an update shortly.

thx ,

For the explenation JG1 , next test kit will be the K kit
I am about to try the Red sea kit.

Very Nice Build!!! I can definately tell you put alot of thought into it. How long were you planning before you started this build?
I was planning for about 1 year as well as saving.

We need some new pictures!
There are coming...

Make sure you get the Red Sea pro colors potassium test kit. It's titratable and very accurate. The other kits are turbidity and reading them is subjective.

thx for the tip JG1  ,
gonna look at local internet stores if they have them.

+1 for the pictures

wow amazing set up from top to bottom!!
Thank you

Thank you. Canon 550D Rebel Ti2

Thanks boss... all over now!

All this is very impressive!!
Thanks

I love your Korallen Zucht aragonite substrate. Wish I could get it in the U.S. or Canada. Looks way better than Carib Sea special reef grade.
Yes it does have great appearance... I'm surprised you can't get it in the US at the zeovit online store.

check out tropic Eden sand.
Ahhh... that is what I have been interested in and strongly recommended.

I asked him the same question a couple month's earlyer , and answered me that he shot and filmed it with an canon 550D

Thanks again!

Update time

The tank is going well however I am in the process of replacing the sand bed. Most of the sand was removed over a 2 week period. During this time I have been monitoring the water flow/movement to see where any dead spots.

I decided to go with Tropic Eden Mini Flakes and was going to order in from the US but my tank builder here in HKG carries it. So, I picked some up last weekend.... with the help of the misses of course!

I also purchased another vortech pump (MP40W ES) and this is placed on the island side. The other vortech MP20 will go to the other end of the tank.

I have been running filter socks when I am in town to help remove detritus. I don't use one when I'm away as I like to clean it daily.

One of the gobies died 3 weeks ago... just didn't seem to be eating however the other one is going fine. Hopefully he will stay happy during this sand removal transition. He does eat like the other fish so hopefully he will be fine.

I will look a getting a wrasse later this month... haven't decided what type yet.

Pics

My parents got me this for my birthday last month. Should help keep the dining table clean!

Awwww now if she goes and tells all the others misses then we'll get the "why don't you buy me flowers anymore" questions. you've let the boys down buddy.........

Congrats on the pass too!!!

Andrew,

Your gonna love that sand!

How did you settle on such a low Start3 dose. 0.25ml 2x's/day?

Isn't it supposed to be 0.1 ml / 100 liters/25 US gallons 2 x daily?
