A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

I think your mermaids are very happy in their new home! Seems like they can have a carnival in that monster. Congrats - your tank is WONDERFUL.

Very nice place to do a family portrait! You can also photoshop a reef into the background too or after the tank is up and running you can photoshop your family in!

U know if your going to spend years looking in you should at least know what's its like to look out

Thanks sh8g8delik! Perhaps once it is all done we will do a portrait in front of it.

Fazilosman. Thank you for your comments. All the mermaids seem to be very happy. If I can finish adding all of the salt, perhaps I can start adding some of my rock towers this weekend!

congrats :) the system looks amazing, cant wait to see it stocked :)

Thank you Allmost. It is coming along a lot faster and much better than I anticipated. I am enjoying every moment, even getting this barrel of salt into into the tank!

Wow this tank is going to be awesome! I can't wait to see more pictures of it!

Thank you marc49127! I hope to be able to post more pics tomorrow.

The tank has been filled and I have spent the day working on the rock towers and on the fish room.

Glad you are following along!

The Rock Towers Are In!!!!!

The Rock Towers Are In!!!!!

What a day!

So Joe from Simply Elegant Equatics came over just before noon. We took the three rock towers out of the horse troughs where they have been curing for the last month.

Some of the towers had some red slime algae so we pressure washed those areas with freshly made salt water, prior to doing some minor repairs with HoldFast.

Attached is a pic of the towers outside. They are huge!

Joe than made a scaffold in the fish room to hold each of the towers. I'd say they each weigh 70-90lbs and they are awkward to maneuver. Prior to bringing the towers inside, he also protected the tank by placing cardboard and foam board against the sides so that nothing got scratched up.

The kid is strong. He carried them all pretty much with ease.

Then the fun started. I put on my goggles, stripped down to my gym shorts and climbed into the tank. The water was cold and it took several minutes to get used to. Joe was having a blast laughing at my discomfort. Thank goodness my wife and daughters weren't around. I was smart and sent them off for massages.

One by one, Joe lowered the towers into the tank. It definitely took two of us. One of the few times I suppose I will be in the tank and it looks a lot different looking out then in!

What do you think? Do I qualify for a "Mr. Sexy Legs Contest?"

The end result I am incredibly happy with. Each tower is roughly 36" - 38" tall. The pictures don't give the towers justice and I don't have my lighting installed yet. I am just using a few clip-on fixtures that I bought at Ace Hardware. Additionally, there is a lot of glare coming in from my living room window.

The live sand should arrive Tuesday morning.

Oh mah gooooodnessss! Those are rockwork. Ill be happy with just one of those, or maybe even a scaled down version. They look aztecish!!

I love it... Sorry going to try a small version on my new build - you have inspired me with those works of art. Seeing your fish swim between those pillars will be priceless.

Hey, you could have pee'd while you were in there and got a jump start on your cycle...
Looking really nice, those columns are way cool!
