A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Joe, you crack me up. Not always sure if you are serious or joking.

I will be sure to attach a long hose to a snorkel mask and have Sam film me, the next time I need to stick my head or body into the tank. Hopefully it will be a long while though, it's starting to get a little crowded in there.

Dan,

A lot of the time I am joking but being serious here I am actually hoping to start to large tank here in the next year. It started with a depth of 36" and you have slowly got me to increase it to 40" (I'm not sure about those other 8"). The snorkel idea came from getting my dive certification a few years back. I hated them as a kid but the ones they have now work, but I still hate to use them. The nice part here would be allowing you to focus on the coral but issues you'll need to deal with are.

1) To clear a snorkel of any water you get in it you'll need to blow air into it. This with send the water flying out the top of the snorkel (something to keep in mind).

2) You want it long enough allow you to get to where you want to put the coral BUT when you exhale your expelled air will be in that snorkel so the longer the length the larger the amount of "old" air. Too much of this "old" air and you'll get a little light headed.

The bottom line is I do think it is something to think about and if you are trying to deal with a piece that you can see will cause trouble this will most likely be a big help.

Now on the joking side. I do have the dive gear and we could do a dive in your tank and take care of all that coral :spin2:

My avatar is a very reversed colored goldentail moray from a dive in Bonaire. So there is enough room in your tank let's do a dive.

Thanks Joe. As long as Dave.M is going to hold my ankles...

If I did have to submerge myself into the tank I'd consider it. Fortunately, I have a 13 year old and for a few $$ he would get in there in a heartbeat! I rather have a few friends come over, former bball players with long arms, do the coral glueing for me.

How come you don't currently have a tank set up?
Broke and unemployed. I do an aquarium maintenance business, but there is no money in it. The usual post-2008 tale of woe for most IT people. At least I get to muck about with other people's tanks.

Sounds like you have a lot going on here so how about I take over the job of supervisor. If there is one thing I can say about me it is I like work, I can watch it for hours. In fact I'll be in Dave's neighorhood in a couple of weeks, I could pick him up, bring some beer and popcorn and watch the everyone bob for fish.

Hi, I'm not sure what I'm looking at here. Is this a holothurian in front of a dendronephthia, or is it all holothurian?

Dan, what type of wrasse is that and how many do you have in your tank?

Hey Leroy!

It's a Green Coris Wrasse that over the years has become lighter. I used to have it in my old 150. I just have the one, I have tried adding a mate on two different occasions, but it ends up getting terrorized by this one. It doesn't seem to bother my yellow wrasses, melanrus or any of my other wrasses.

Looking Great. I really like the pic of the powder blue.

Joe

Joe, they are my favorite fish!

The two I have now are getting along great! I have two Achillies Tangs in one of my QT's that I hope to be introducing shortly to the main display. They will be giving the Powder Blues a run for the money!

Dave, it is in the Holothuriidae family. It's a pink spiny cucumber that I have had for 4 years or so.

It's fun to watch eat. It alternates sticking one of its arms/tentacles in its mouth. Really cool!
