A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Dan,

I heeded Lawrence's advice the other night and went downstairs a few hours after lights out and went poking around in the tank. With a 100+ fish in the tank the only ones not buried in the rock were the Bangai cardinals.

Tangs, Angels, Wrasses were nowhere to be seen (Which is 30+ fish)

I may order a fish trap this month and try to catch a couple of my least favorite fish.

Glad to see you had a great weekend with your son.

I can see it working in certain systems. I know that when I come into the fish room during the night and check out my QT's, the two Blonde Naso's are cowering on the bottom of the tank in one of the corners.

I just can't easily move a net around my system.

Ozone Reactor

Ozone Reactor

While I was away this past weekend, I received my new Del Ozone Reactor. I was able to hook it up tonight and hopefully I will not have any issues with it.

I'll be sending back to Del the unit that kept blowing internal fuses.

I'm wondering what your matinence schedule consists of? Your tank looks very self sustainable and well maintained. how big of a water change do you do, or are you running the dialiseas I thought I read it in a previous post.

Joe

Dan, I have just spent two days reading every post in your thread. What an incredibly inspirational read.
I am just starting my 400 gallons system (220 DT, 100 sump, dual 40b frags) and I can't tell you how many ideas, tips and STUFF I have gotten from this!
Big ups and thanks for being such a mensch!
Just truly beautiful!

Hey Joe.

It's really not that bad! Let's see. Twice a week I take a magnet across the glass of my display tank. Sometimes three times per week!

My Skimmate Locker is emptied weekly or twice weekly. I also take a paper towel or two around the inside of my skimmer to remove any gook.

I generally remove 100 gallons per week, usually on Fridays. Sometimes a little more. I usually remove 20-30 gallons from my QT's which involves siphoning out all the uneaten food and fish waste. I do the same with my Seahorse Tank.

What else... I clean the front panels on the QT's, Fuge and Seahorse Tank weekly or twice weekly. In order to clean the back and side glass panels, I need to use a brush, scraper, etc.

Usually on Fridays I will also vacuum the gravel in my main display a little and will scrape off any Coraline that has grown on the front glass panel.

As far as the Dialyseas. I never set it up. I told my LFS to sell it for me.

Thank you Anim8me2!

I am glad that my build has been both inspirational and a help to you! Good luck with your build. Make sure you start a thread and don't hesitate to ask for help. It's amazing how much help there is out here!

Wow, ~100g a week?! That's more than my entire system lol I have a 60g mixed reef

It's a lot of water. I could probably get away with doing less water changes with all of the filtration equipment that I have. But it works. Stay tuned though, I am working on something to help with the water changes.

A Special FedEx Friday!

A Special FedEx Friday!

As much as I want to stay up and watch all the basketball games tonight and the replays on ESPN, I am going to need to get a good nights sleep.

Tomorrows going to be a fun filled day between the deliveries, my hands getting wet and gettin' a lil dirty.
