A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Dan,
I just now read the whole thread. All I can say is that I am amazed and inspired by your posts! Thanks for sharing and for being an anchor for reefing in Tucson.
Jeff

Dan,
How did you cure the dry rock? How long?
Thanks
Jeff

I forgot to mention that I got some dry rock from BRS and have it in one of my BRUTES with a pump and a heater. Was planning on keeping it there for a solid month.

Thanks for the kind words Jeff. I cured the rock for a few months. I would cycle the water in my Brutes or troughs with the water that I removed from my main tank during water changes. The BRS rock can be hit or miss and there are a lot of forums on here that discusses the leaching of phosphates with their dry rocks. The plus with the BRS rock is that they are easy to stack and work with.

Good luck!

Dan,

Tank looks great -- Some serious colonies growing out in there. It's amazing how the first couple of photos you barely see any of your fish.

You need to program a White Photography mode into your Radions so you can get more white light for the photos.

Shoot us some photos of what's going on in the back room..... Please !!!!

Sam is coming to Tucson within the next two weeks with all of his gear. He plans on taking lots of pictures and creating a few new videos for me too.

I need to clean the fish room before any new pics of it are taken!

I am in love with your tank. While I can't imagine the work it takes to keep something like this up I would love to have something like that in my house.

Everything looks awesome; thanks for the update. Still have the 2 Sohals?

Thank you for the kind words. Yes, my Shoals are awesome! They are not the aggressive fish that I was expecting them to be. The next fish to go in my display will be the Whitetails...

Yes I have stuck my GoPro in my tank once... I need to do it a few more times at different angles and even around feeding time.

Looking forward to the video.

I am looking forward to it too. Sam tells me that I should have the videos next week to share!

Thanks Sal. When are you going to make it down to Tucson?

I was in Tucson last week and definitely thought of contacting you. We were visiting an elderly couple at hospital and it was a quick trip up and back. I will definitely take you up on that offer. And if you are ever in Scottsdale and have time, make sure to stop by.

I just did my last fish additions to my tank. I added an Achilles that I had in QT for 6 months and my Sohal that I had for 2 years into my DT a month ago. I did it at the same time and can you believe they are doing good together. My Achilles is very large almost as big as my Sohal, but the Sohal rules the tank. With so many tangs in my tank, no one really gets picked on too much by the Sohal. He's just a big bully, and does short quick chases every now and then. I didn't mention my new additions on my thread, because I didn't want the reef central tang police stalking me. :-)

The photos you posted look amazing. Your tank is really thriving and the coral growth has been incredible. Definitely looking forward to the video.
