A say day

Last night, when I got home from school, I found my ray upside down on the bottom on my tank. :( . I immediately checked all the levels, perfect across the board. Temp was 78. salinity 1.023. Fish and shark were doing fine. Water was crystal clear and smelled normal. I have no idea how this happened:mad: .The lil guy ate his usual dinner of a cube of mysis, and was acting normally when I left for school. I checked his body, Not a bite or scratch mark, Nothing stuck in its mouth, NOTHING...Right now, I am totally confused on how this happened, why it happened, and if anything was wrong, why didn't anything else get affected :(

I know rays have a tendency to just drop off randomly, but, I didnt think that it was common in a D. Khullis. If anyone has any info that could help me figure out what couldve gone wrong/happened to the lil guy, that would be great. But today is a sad day:(

ray was tiny, maybe had at least 4 times it length on the width of the tank, and a ridiculous amount of space in length. it had a wingspan of about 4 1/2 inches when i picked him outa the tank last nite, and as i have only little rock in the tank, I dont think that would be the problem, the shark is only 13 inches from head to tail as well. This is their temp home while i was building a pond, but they are both tiny and could still survive in a 125 for a good while.

From research and talking to people who have housed rays/sharks, I was told it was better to keep the ray in a smaller tank until it is a lil bit larger. Since mine was very tiny.

heres a good lil video to show you how small it is to the relative tank size.

Man Im sorry to hear that! Thats terrible...

From what I saw in your video, he looked healthy. I think he was eating out of your hands right? I agree that that tank would have been too small but I saw the size of the ray and shark and they were fine until you build your pond. I doubt it was tank size at all. Its funny how people immediately jump on tank size without asking first about upgrades! Especially when the fish are so small still like yours. That drives me nuts! Anyways, thats really too bad.

Oh...hahaha. You posted the video after I had posted. Well after seeing the vid again, I would say it had nothing to do with tank size. Hes tiny!

ya, i know, its just, really bugging me, not the fact that he died, but the fact that, i have no idea how he died, I mean, if he found his way outa the tank, or got stuck in a powerhead or sumthing like that, I wouldnt feel half as bad, as I know it had nothing to do w/ me. But atm, I'm kinda frustrated, and really edgy, because I dont want anything to affect my other tank residents.

and ya, he was eating outa my hand ><. the night before he died, he hate a whole cube of mysis (which is alot of food for his size) and was egging me for more, by coming up to my hand and rubbing against it all sorts.

Dern, man. Sorry to hear. :( Wish I could help you figure out what was wrong, but I'm stunned, too. Hope that doesn't happen to your Brownbanded and your other fish.

Small juveniles of any fish species tend to be a challenge. One thing is that they need to eat frequently, several small meals throughout the day as opposed to one or two large ones. How often were you feeding and what were you feeding it?

His feedin regiment was.
a quarter to half a cube of brine, mysis, silverside, clams, nautilis or shrimp before school (depending on how much he would eat)
after school, he seemed to pick up alot of pieces of brine/mysis/shrimp that spewed outa my puffer mouth while he attempted to eat it, so id call that half a meal (sometimes he ate alot, sometimes he didnt seem hungry, if he didnt seem hungry for what the puffer was dropping, I would offer him a lil of his own)
same regiment as before school for before bed

sorry to hear that i loved seeing vids of that little guy i hope you have better luck in the future

ya, i do plan on getting another one, I am going to wait till I get my pond going before I do. But I talked to the LFS, and the guy said that they are more common to get in warmer weather, and they can order them on a weekly basis in the summer. So I will probably order one then, as I shoudl have my pond up and running then.

Well, I picked up a stars n stripes puffer. Him and my porcupine are doing great together. They are always swimming with each other. That kinda cheered me up:rolleyes:

I have been, for the last 2 hours ><, the new puffer already ate, is extremely active, and seems to enjoy the tank....

However, I was hoping this lil guy would eat all the hermits I unintentionally released into my tank (all 20 of em). I was wrong  2 puffers that wont eat inverts...just my luck:p
