A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

I currently have a small 65 gal SPS display and have begun building the stand for a 66x32x20" peninsula style SPS dominant reef display. I want to also add a 3'x3'x14" shallow display which will share the large sump and this will be placed on a much lower stand so the top of the tank is only about 4ft high. I will have a suspended hood over this display so i can go 'hands wet' at any time.
I called my journal a splash of color because i want what all of us want, a healthy colorful reef display. I just want mine to look like a rainbow on speed fell in the water........... :)
I will be doing lots of little pic tutorials on all manner of things such as how to mix epoxy without it sticking to your fingers but i really want to get into the nitty gritty of rock and coral scaping because i have a background in bonsai keeping and the artistry of both hobbies is very similar.

I won't be in a position to order the peninsula until just after Xmas so with holidays i expect it will be sometime in February when i have water in the new tank. At least that will leave me lots of time to run my ideas past those of you who are interested and we can hopefully avoid any design flaws with the large sump i plan to use.

That's all for now but i'll explain what i have in mind for the new system next time and maybe draw up a mud map of the sump layout i'm thinking of. :)

^^^ hahaha... jumping on board. Get it :-P

I also think that counts as a SPLASH, of something, in honor of your new thread title :jester:

Bloody Mark, I wanted to be first:hammer:. If it wasn't nearly midnight last night I would have been #1. Anyway I'm soooooo excited about this build and I get to follow it from the beginning too:dance:. So your going for a twin DT system, man that is cool.
Definitely subbed, let the fun begin:).
You've done Bonsai hey, I've just started to give it a try, go any pics of your trees present or past?

Look forward to the new build thread mate. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience, as well as the moments of laughter along the way.

Thanks heaps for the kind words and encouragement guys :) The custom tanks will all be ordered through my LFS Marty.

I cleaned up the 65 gal and spread the sand around so the water is dirty but you can still see what's what for a starting point on our journey together into SPS peninsula madness......... :smokin:

Just realized you have a background in bonsai. That's awesome! I've been out of that hobby since I moved out of my parents house years ago and lost a yard, but it was really interesting. I shake my head when I see people on here growing mangroves, bending a couple branches, and calling them bonsai lol. Reminds me of those "mallsai" ficus they sell in the big box stores as bonsai.

Wow you too white, maybe we should start a RC bonsai club:D

I'm down. I wonder if my profile at the bonsai forum I used to belong to is still active? Actually, I planted a larch like 6 years ago now at a campground I used to work at. I planted it on top of a huge tile so I bet it has some killer nebari. I'll have to check it out next time I travel home.

But I digress, on to biggles tank. Don't mean to side track this.

The art and techniques of bonsai translate directly to reef keeping and in particular the tree like growth patterns of Acropora sp. so don't ever think you're going off topic in that regard mate :)
If you want inspiration for your rock scape simply google images for 'bonsai rock planting' to see why the two hobbies mesh so well.

I still can't believe this happened today..........

Mate drops round on the way to a shopping mall which his wife was making him take her to on a Sunday......

She looks at the peninsula stand and get this:

' Oh is that for your new fish tank ' - strike one

' Yes it is ' i say through gritted teeth

' You should put a book case on this side ' pointing to the main viewing side - strike two

' Why would you want a book case on the side ' i could see my mate knew he was in trouble when i glared his way

' To make a feature of it in the room, otherwise it's just going to be a lot bigger nemo tank like your little one there ' - pointing to my ' little #%$^# nemo tank while she said it

Now i had edged to within a few feet of the knife block on my kitchen bench by this point and my mate is saying ' anyway we better get going to beat the crowds at the shops hon ' - i was already thinking of how to explain the deaths to the police.....

She was walking towards the door but worse was still to come, she spotted the pile of frag discs on the kitchen bench like the ones she saw in the tank and here my friends is the piece de resistance.....

' You should paint these ones all different bright colors and put them all around your fish tank to make the nemos happy ' - you know that bit in the movie just before the massive earthquake hits and the birds all fly off....... all the birds near my place flew off right at that moment.......

They both left uninjured and my mate knows never to bring her by again to check out my little #%$#% nemo tank or my little #$$^% book case ! :angryfire:

 I can understand how you feel buddy...My relatives used to come and say my tank looks fake because I ran a barebottomed system...:angryfire:

Looking forward to the combination of both you reefkeeping and bonsai hobbies. This is going to be fun.

Bello, if you can somehow access the Internet from the depths of the forest...you'd better return quickly...
