the trip

This may upset you a little, but one of guys said as we were beginning to finish for the day, can some one get me a tang, I need an algae muncher for my tank, this was his first trip with us and had no idea how to catch a fish, so he was caught one and than it was remembered that one of the guys that couldn’t be there on the trip, we given him an angler fish and he had asked for some feeder fish for it from the trip.

He was caught one Cole tang, yellow damsel, blue damsel, a small checker board wrasse and two cardinals, all quite small.

They are slowly going down that ugly mouth; personally they look a hell of a lot better than the very ugly angler

There are always a few little cole tangs around, until they are all collected by the commercial guys, infact the club may (if the water is clear enough) be going up the sun shine coast for some more goodies for mainly one of the clubbie in particulars tank tomorrow, he has set up another tank,4 foot I think and it is very mature now so he wants us all to chase some colour for it.

You get some very nice fish from the shops, but one of the main reasons we get our own, a part from saving dollars, having a ball and gaining valuable environmental insights, is the most damaging time for a marine fish to there chances of survival is the first 48 hours as that’s around the length of time it takes before their internals are damaged by the continually induced stress causing adrenalin production with in them.

So it’s a win, win for us and the fish.

I agree with the survival,as all the fish I have caught have are still swimming around in my tank.Wife got upset when I bought them & died.Told me I can only catch now.Well good excuse to get out more.:p
If he using Kole tang as feeder fish, would he do a trade on other feeder fish?

There is only the blue damsel and the honey(yellow) damsel left any way, from what he has said to Phil.

The club trip was just to one of those spots where there is so much life of those types its rediculous.

There are heaps of semis this year.

I think next season will be a problem for others to start as there are so many lionfish around there are to many for even the commercial guys to bother with.

I think in the morning we may end up looking like popsicles,it is going to be very cold.

Good luck with the collecting mate,it is very good for cardio excercise and saves money of course.

See yah.

I've gotten soft & have a drysuit :) takes a bit to get all air out,but nice & warm.

dry suit

dry suit

(a dry suit),now thats wimpy.us super butch aquarium collecting snorkellers are supposed to be able to tolerate any thing.

Sounds good,hey.

we went for a swim this morning and Danny was in first,he had gotten two fish before i was even in,Nick and I were very delecate.

i sat on the rocks looking in thinking, gez that looks cold,i got in and we had a ball,as usual.

If it wasn't for nick wanting a tang for his tank,i would have sat there with my thermos of coffee and thrown rocks at the other guys.

After all that we didn't get any tangs, other things but no tangs.

i was going to look for a few on the way back and forgot,Danny and Colin forgot as well, when we got back he said did any one get me a tang,i got back in for a while but the current had come up and it was no good.

I have a semi dry plush lined wet suit, that will be on soon.

I know,I am wimpy as well!

Now just how cold can it be if your catching tropicals? Heck, my last dive (just the other weekend) was in 55F water, in a wetsuit :D

temp

temp

The water temp on the ocean reports for this weekend just gone is 20 degrees in the areas we go to at the moment.

In normal years the winter water temp gets down to between 14 and 16 degrees.

In most years winter kills off a lot of the tropicals around here,if it wasnt for global warming our ocean normally in a months time is quite cold.

We havent had a normal year like that for 3 years now,the ocean temps are rising, but in one month it has gone from 25 dgrees to 20,its a bot cold.

Brisbane isnt tropical, just in summer it is,in recent past winters we get frost all over the place, this morning we have 7 degrees and you can see your breath.

One of our premier dive sites up until 3 to 4 years ago always got down to around 16 degrees temp in winter.

You fall over the side of the boat and nearly bounce straight back up,you wish you were still in the boat.

we get thermoclines in some spots down to 13 degrees, ouch!!!

i know other places have it colder than here, but we never used to be tropical in our winters.

Not all that different here, a bit colder in the winter, but around the same temps in the summer. I'll be collecting tropicals in a couple of months when the water temps warm up and the gulf stream starts bringing in some juveniles up from the tropics.

Drysuit comes in when you're about to start the second dive.Watching people faces as they put there cold wet wetsuit on.I'm sitting there toasty & warm.:p

:D Fair enough.

we are going ot hit the water this weekend, maybe by boat??

I am not looking forward to the temps they are predicting, eerrrr!

semi dry,it's going to be on .

Where are looking at going.Saturday if weather stays like it I'm looking at Aahrus,Cementco & finish with a night dive @ Tangalooma

dive

dive

We only go on snorkel on club trips,we can't collect on tank in Queensland these days.

Three of us scuba in the club, but not at the exact same spot on the club collecting trips.

Dave and i go on scuba quite a bit,but when he can he likes to do some tech diving,i am not into really deep stuff,i like form 40 to 80 feet thats my favourite.

The last couple of spots have been 80 to 105ish at cherubs and china wall,it was okay, but i am into heaps of bottom time and there isn't much safely at that depth and i find those spots boring.

we had a good time at boat rock the other day, some scuba some snorkel, very nice,if it is a bit erie, current or scary i like it!

When we go out to a deep spot i normally go down for half a tank on each one use up a full tank over all and sit in the boat and have a hot drink and wait for dave and than i get him to stop at a shallow ish spot on the way back,so i can have a long dive and than a snorkle some where.

Which mob are you diving with or is it some mates boat.

I sold my boat late last year, always had the families or my own for over 35 years, its weird now, sometimes back than i would go on my own, sometimes i would fill the boat with mates, its sought of up to some one else now where we go.

One of the other clubbies has one,we will see what happens there.

If you have any interesting adventures let us know the story.

I have my own boat,22 ft coxcraft pantera.I do occasionally do deep deco dives. But generally like the 20m/ 60ft range.
Always an adventure!!
Cheers
