ABC in Cuse'

Yup That Stuff
Heading up there tomorrow to put some corals and hopefully a red striped goby in my 8g to get back into the hobby. I've been out for a while now and am looking for coral suggestions. Pretty much looking at softies and LPS might get into some SPS but not until after some time. Let the suggestions fly. Thanks

Used to love this store, back when jeremy was kinda in charge...twas my go to place for anything
this past weekend i went in, sooo disappointed...i asked the kid there if there was any chance of them having or getting any bowsers, and the kid said to me
"what are bowsers"
seriously... all in all i have been pretty disappointed in the syracuse area LFS's lately. why cant we have rochester, or buffalo type stores here?
good equipment, pretty much sick of jebao
some nicer corals other than darth mauls...and green birdsnest
online seems the only place for me to get what i want anymore...
***end rant***

Hmmmm,,, had to google what the hell a bowser was. Back in the day and still today I call them zoanthids

I'm an ABC homer. Their stock fluctuates like anywhere. Part of the problem is that they are in Syracuse. Like it or not, they don't have the same census of reefers as Buffalo or Rochester. Despite that, they go out of their way to do livestock/coral runs every other week or so. Hand picking stuff limits mortality by avoiding bagging and shipping. Tim tries to honor every special request that comes in, but he's at the mercy of their suppliers. I think he actually enjoys the challenge. Get on their email list. He sends one out right before and after any big runs. Let's you know about sales etc.

I could go on...

Jeremy does have a Phd in corals, I'll give him that. As for Bowsers, I knew they were a zoanthid, but that's where things unravel quickly. I'm always impressed when people can recognize the different color morphs and rattle off their names. 90% of the time I'm certain their making it up on the fly. "Check out these bacon double crud burgers from WWC!" I'm like, "uhhh I like them there orangie 'uns" (then scratches self).

Another huge fan of ABC Reefs. I didn't have a tank for a few years and I was pretty disappointed that Jeremy left but I have found Bob to be great and super helpful. He knows his stuff and gives me a good price on trade-ins. I don't see how the store is so disappointing in comparison to when Jeremy worked there. As far as equipment, they will order whatever you want. There are things that I could nitpick but overall we're pretty lucky to have a store like this in Syracuse.

Also, I've been in the hobby for over 20 years and I have never heard of bowsers.

im not saying im not a fan, im just saying that after my years in the hobby, (at least in the syracuse area) none of the selection has changed.
perhaps thats y i liked it more when jeremy was there, as i was relatively new to the hobby, and the seletion was all new to me as well. but after 8 years, its all the same stuff ... as for Tim being able to order me something... I can order me something, i usually just dont want to wait to pick it up...last year i walked in, and they had a 36" reefbrite there. BAM! owned it...if he had said "i can order you one" i wouldnt have bought it there...
this is just idle chatter, not intending to bash anyone here

All the stores have their role. I remember buying peppermint shrimp out of Tim's trunk. ABC has come a long way. live in Rochester, make the drive few times a year. salt , fish , tanks. seldom leave empty handed. impulse bought some jellyfish at the last swap thinking they'd probably not last. quirky little buggers are alive and well.

I prefer fish finatics out in manlius(sp). While I've bought a few things from ABC, I find their prices to be a bit high, and I hate being accosted when I walk through the door. Kind of like a pushy car salesman.

After reading this thread I checked thier website to see if they were open yesterday(they used to be closed monday and tuesday). They were supposed to be open at noon. Showed at 1:30 and the place is locked up tighter then a drum! So glad I made the 3 hour drive to see what I could throw some money at.

Ended up going to my normal LFS, and picked up a nice green plate and a black leopard wrasse.

Why post yourself as open, if you don't plan on being open?

With all the on-line competition, it's got to be tough to stay in business as a LFS. From my perspective, ABC does a great job at keeping a variety of stock which is normally in good condition. I appreciate having a good LFS and will continue to support them, although I'm running out of room for stuff in my existing tanks.

Someone(I wont name any names) had dinner with the owner of ABC and was telling him of my situation.

I'm very impressed with the owner response, even going so far as to offer me discounts for having to drive so far and not being open when they were supposed to be. Although I appreciate the gesture, its certainly not needed or warranted in my eyes. This above all else will bring me back into ABC, and shows the owner actually cares about his customers.

LFS's like this are hard to find, and when you do, you want to support them as much as possible so they don't go the way of the DODO bird.

It's nice that he would do that but the website still says they're open on Mondays and I don't think they have ever been open on a Monday.

They are open on Mondays as of the past few months. Noon to 8 I believe. Extenuating circumstances aside....

I would encourage anyone with an issue to reach out to the owner. He is a hobbiest at heart. He does have a full time job and relies on his manager and employees. Staffing issues can and do come up.

Anyone can reach out to me at anytime if they'd like his contact info.

I personally deal with "Tim" the owner for all my orders. He has special ordered all of my equipment including my tank along with my livestock. Top notch and well worth the 90 minute drive one way for me.

I use abc for some not all of my salt water wants. Most of the time i get what i want or need. Usually the service is good or great . But like anyplace or person you will have a crappie day . I have left disappointed before. Dose not mean i won't be back. Im sure I've let people down before with my business, it happens . Not my intention if given the chance i will try harder to be better. And im sure tim is the same .

I can't even begin to heap enough praise on this place. I've been in this hobby in one way or another for almost 30 yrs. There has never been a store in this area that even comes close to level of customer care and service the people here provide!! I'm very old school when it comes to what I expect in the way of customer care. Most places don't even know the meaning of the phrase anymore. But these guys deliver the goods time after time. And even more than that They are great people to just talk to and hang out with sometimes.
