I was thinking of gettintg the Dual Reactor they have and wanted to fill it with some high capacity GFO and some of their premium ROX carbon but wanted to know if anyone here has used these 2 products and what their thoughts were on them..

If anyone has used their 2 part starter kit and would like to chime in on that I would appreciate it as well..

Thanks

Mike we use the 2 part but I buy in bulk where it is real cheap. I got 4-5 bags of the old calcium and get the soda from sams cant remember where I got the other stuff. If you want to try it let me know and I can set you up with some calcium and Joy can tell you how it is mixed. Norman got us the containers though and they are nice for the delivery.

I have some of the ROX, the pellets are tiny. the 0.8 stands for the size of the extrusion (0.8 mm I think). Imagine little pcs of mechanical pencil lead. The std lignite carbon they sell is good stuff too, the "large" size is about the consistency of kitty litter. I believe their std carbon has a higher molasses number relative to the Iodine #. In English, this means their cheaper carbon is better at decoloring and removing the larg(ish) organic molecules than their premium ROX product. Rox, has a higher iodine #, which means it has more small pores relative to large pores. Thus ROX is more effective at adsorbing simpler, smaller compounds. For aquarium applications, we're generally more interested in carbons with high molasses numbers and decoloring efficiency than iodine numbers. Everything they sell is steam activated and washed with phosphate free acids, and you really can't go wrong. However, I'd probably give the edge to their standard product. It's as good (or better) than anything else generally available that I've seen.

As far as GFO, their regular granular GFO is the industry standard, It appears to be the same stuff in phosban/etc. There are only one or two mfg's in the world that make this stuff, AFAIK bulk reef is the only vendor to bring the high capacity to the aquarium market. Regular GFO has a fairly long lifespan in the average tank, I don't know what add'l value the high capacity would bring.

Hope this helps.

Wayne - I'll get with you about the 2 part.. Thanks

cczarnik - Thanks alot that really answers the questions on the carbon and GFO that I had...

I'll stick with their standard stuff...

Thanks for your help..

will the gfo harm soft corals? i am battling a nutrient export issue that has turned into a cyano issue, will the carbon/gfo reactor help in my battle?

I utilize all these product from BRS. The 2 stage reactor is fairly simple to use and allows you to change the carbon more often than the GFO. I 1st tried the HC-GFO but on my second order went down to the pelletized. I don't test for PO4 so I can't speak to any real differences between the two. After reading cczarnik's post on their carbon, I will be switching from the Rox .08 to their standard on my next order.

Their two part + mag kits are great. Appear to be perfectly balanced. Unless you have the gallonage that Wayne does, I would give them a try.
