? about shark tank

Same here, 6 and 7 foot white tip reef sharks off Cabo San lucas.

Did I mention 6 and 7 footers, people think they are so cute at the fish store when they are only 1.5 -2 foot long.

Also swam with a 3 foot horn shark, and caught and released a 6 foot + or - Leopard shark. These shark start small but will grow bigger then you may even think to consider.

I dont know much about keeping sharks in captivity. But I do know that electrical fields do affect sharks. Here are 2 different types of shark shields that we use when diving. They let out electricial charges as you move..messes them up & keeps them away

Spaceshark.....I totally agree with you....Once you see them in the wild, you wont want to keep them in a tank.

i think if people have the room and budget to keep a shark then go for it! just make sure you know what your getting yourself into. i don't think people should get bashed because they want to keep a shark. and i haven't dove with sharks but i've snorkeled with back tips and fed them. i still think it would be amazing to keep one! many people have kept sharks before with success. this thread has gotten way off track because someone asked for help with there shark tank...they didn't ask to be told not to do it.

Well, since George is again dashing the hopes of all who want to try husbanding a living creature, may I make a suggestion.

My local LFS here in Detroit raises tank bred and raised white spotted bamboo sharks, eppaulette sharks, and coral cat sharks. You can even buy them as eggs and watch them hatch in your tank if you choose. And no, these DO NOT BELONG in the ocean, as they would die instantly if they were taken from their natural environment (a 15 by 30 foot fabricated tank) and put back into the ocean. I am absolutely POSITIVE you can find some tank raised sharks in your area.

Also, they have not noticed that they respond poorly to electromagnetic interferance, as they are hatched into that environment and grow to not nitice it as much, thus less affecting their navigation and sensory perception.

Look, and yee shall find. This is America. The land of eternal opportunity. If you want it bad enough, you can have it.

I read this article a few weeks ago about the shark shield:
A Shark Shield designed to deter and fend off sharks has failed to show its deterrent properties while it was promptly devoured by a Great White Shark off the shores of South Africa.

A report has been heard that the Shark Shield surf model was activated on a float carrying bait when a 3.6m female shark approached. The shark bit into it.

South Australian Deputy State Coroner Tony Schapel yesterday heard of the test failure during the inquest into the death of Jarrod Stehbens, who was taken by a great white shark while diving off Glenelg in South Australia in 2005. The inquest of the Shark Shield has turned into a trial of these devices, hearing concerns that the electronic fields generated to repel sharks may attract them.

Rod Hartley, director of Sea Change Technology, which manufactures the Shark Shields, has allegedly taken the stand to defend his product.

Mr Hartley has said the failed South African test on the surf unit - which has been held back from release into the marketplace - was due to a problem with the electrode's configuration. The device was now packaged with a large disclaimer warning it would only repel sharks when the surfer was still in the water waiting for a wave.

Maxheadroom,

This info really should be in the SCUBA threads, but Iam not sure if you go there or not.

Thanks for the info....Sorry to get off track on this guys thread.

But if you are going to post information discrediting something, you really should post the entire artical from which you got your information. Not edit it to the way you want it to sound. Or maybe you misread it. The shark shields may not be a full proof. The artical does say that there are no reports of an attact when the shark shield was used.

The artical also says, & ( this is what you left out ) that there were 2 different shark shields given to Jarrod Stehbens by the Univ on his dive boat, and either he did not know that they were there or he chose not to use them. In either case they were not used.

My only point here is not whether they work or not, My piont in this reply is, if your going to quote an artical of information, Please post the entire artical.
I have used them...never got attacked yet. Maybe the trick is...strap it to your friends leg..LOL

Here it is if you chose to read it.....

NewFish3, click the link that I posted. What I posted is all they have. I didn't realize there was more. And I wasn't trrying to hijack the thread. Just thought this was relevent to the discussion. At least the part about electrical noise in the home that george81 posted. BTW, I'm a mgr at a dive shop in south fl, I dive alot, never with a shark shield, though.

No problem......And I didn't mean for it to come across in a bad way. Ididn't read the link that you posted. I had already seen the artical. When I read your post, I said to myself.....Wait, he's done a huge edit job on that. I wanted the info to be correct. I did think it was funny & thought.....hhhhmmmm maybe thats the idea. Maybe i read the instructions wrong. It lets out a signal to attract the shark.....so strap it to your buddies leg.....LOL

all is good

What dive shop are you at ? I have most likely beed there

Treasure Coast Dive Center in Stuart. It used to be ScubaQuest.

so strap it to your buddies leg- too funny!

You don't have to be the fastest swimmer, just don't be the slowest.
