I think some of you guys are being totally unfair. This guy is new to the hobby, he's doing this with his son, has retail experience - and didn't feel like his treatment was up to the level he wanted it. Most of you guys have a lot more experience and maybe forgot what its like to be a newbie. Put yourself in his shoes, and in another category.

Defending ATR is great - I think their response is great. But I don't think a few of these posts were all that classy. JMVHO though. Obviously in the minority. But knowing Skip, I doubt he'd really think some of these posts were warranted, either.

(overly protective father mode off now :) )

TOTALLY AGREE...............have been sitting here pondering about what to say but you said it well. I've got all sorts of new people on my ignore list!

Fliger, you are absolutely right.

Steve, I apologize for everything I have said. Being a newbie isn't easy and you deserve better than I have given you.

Fliger, I'm with you on this one. After reading the details of this transaction, I think Scubamaniac was out of line in what he did. But it became like a "gang brawl" with all members taking a swing at the guy. Skip, I have never met you and I have a not so pleasant visit to ATR, but you handled this matter a very professional manner. Even an "old" guy like me can learn something from this and I will make another trip to your store in the future.

I'll be the first to say I'm sorry to the Scuba Maniac. I do forget what its like to be a newbie. If I offended anyone, I am sorry. :)

Kudos to Skip for making it right.

Group Hug.

Scubamaniac - you should go to a FRAG meeting with your son if you haven't. I hardly ever get there anymore due to timing but the group is really killer and really helps out newbies.

I also have to say that for the size of this group - its the best on RC. All the bickering I see in others is really annoying! I've contributed to some bickering on this forum and am sincerely sorry for that - but it always seems like everyone ends up getting along again. On other forums, people get banned. :)

i for one know its hard to resist temption in this hobby, its gotten the better of all of use at one point. this is one lesson that everyone learns. if the frogspawn dies then LMK and i will give you one for free.

but you know that my wifes tank has a frogspawn that host to black clowns. at first the FS didnt like it, but after a week it was fine. i dont know how big your frog spwan is.

-jesse

i still stand by my offer steve. just PM me and i will be more then happy to help.

i hope my comment didnt sound like it was bashing you because i wasnt.

LOL, and I'm not even from Cali. Just my wife, and she is a little ... off ... I just lived there long enough to soften me up ... I'm a Kansas Jayhawk!!

I have a few things to Say

1 I belive you should never take any thing a LFS saya as god
.. the only ? i have is how much and is it eating or ask to see it eat... home work home work home work!! never buy on a wheam
go home think about it!

EQment is diffent allways ask ? about them about it they sould know ...MH is not allway the best lol....

2 they are in it to make $ and pay there bills to.

3. I think it a good thing to put this in the public eye ...even if it a little petty on both side ...

It keeps things right at ATR next time becuse i know next time he will make things right ... a learn for what happend ... most people would get the 1/3 refuned and leave and come back like 1 or 2 times and get teh 1/3 back and never come back ... then later it happens again to someone diffent ... wow skip will have some thing happen and he will think about what happened last time and how can i make every one happy ..

4
Scubamaniac i think next time you need to tell every thing right form the start ... this wouold have been much faster

5.. every store has in goods and bads
i am not happy with ATR too.
i might buy a CA reactor form him becuse he's got nice used ones
but when i asked ? about them now one was help full at all ...

I have installed very very big tanks in the past with closed loops and heat pump... they make cold and heat ...and all types if stuff but i dont know much abou them i ask a ? there like you have to ask the some person that isnt there.

the Fish prices on some stuff it very hi i got a carpender wrasse there i payed $55 dollors the next day i say one for $34 and then found one for $20 at 91th and unionhills but that guy doesnt have ten tank with corels. or half the stock of dips and foods and other little stuff

I think there prop tank sould be in back !! if it out front its for sale!

Most people get up set if you see some thing on the floor and its not for sale ... or like i went to buy so blue zoos and ATR and on of the emploes had them on hold to take home ... thats bull ****
then a week later i came back it was for sale again ..i didnt buy it i was ****ed so i bought some blue tubs off of here ..cheaper

there are other stores ... soon we get a payjets store lol

My Personal Experience at About The Reef

I started this hobby about 6 months ago and the first place that I went was ATR, it came very highly recommended, I spent over 600$ for tank and supplies. I followed there directions to the "T" on how to set up my tank. After about 1 month I went back to purchase my first fish for my new tank, before I bought any I had my water tested by them, it tested good. I then purchased 1 yellow frog fish ($120) and 1 figi fox face rabbit fish ($90) plus food and other supplies for a total of $260 for the visit. I took them home and dripped acclimated them for 1 ½ hours. The two fish lived in the tank for 6 days, the ATR policy is that if they die with in 7 days that they will give you a store credit for the value of the purchase, but the water parameters have to test perfect. But as anyone knows that when you add livestock to the tank that levels may raise a little. When I took my two dead fish back to ATR to discuss what might have gone wrong and to get a store credit, I ran into a snag (Skip). I was told by Skip himself that they were not responsible for the death of the fish, because they both were venomous and may have killed each other and that my water parameters were off a little. I could not spend any more time dealing with this situation at the time for I had to return to work, so I called my wife to let her know what had happened. She called to speak with Skip to get more information about why we would not receive a credit, according to my wife the conversation got heated, and she was told by Skip that he would not be loosing any sleep over the fact that we lost over $200 dollars worth of fish and then he proceeded to hang up on her. After careful consideration we contacted our bank to file a complaint, after about 4 to 6 weeks of them disputing it for us we received a full refund from the bank. In the end we got our money back, but I still am disappointed. The amount of disrespect that he and the store showed me and my wife is disgusting and no one should have to deal with that. I think that the situation could have been handled better by Skip and they should have informed me more about the fish that I had purchased and maybe steered me to less expensive livestock for my first purchase. I have talked to a few people from RC about ATR and they seem to have had similar issues. I feel as if I am not welcome back in ATR and maybe that is why more people have not posted there experiences for fear that they will feel the same way, because ATR is one of the better livestock and supply stores in the valley.

Why didn't YOU do the research on the fish first??? It's YOUR money, not ATR's. YOU decided what fish to buy and put into your tank. YOU decided not to do the research needed on compatibility from the sounds of it. Don't blame the fish store for your screw-up, take responsibility for the fish YOU buy (this goes for everyone!!) and do the research BEFORE you buy!!

You are correct, I have learned my lesson and I do research everything now before I buy. But being so new to the hobby I guess that I expected more knowledgeable people to help and give me good advice. I did not post this to bash ATR I just wanted people to here my experience.

Not to beat you up anymore Steve, but come on, they have a business to run! I heard 16 year olds shouldnt drive fast cars! DOes this mean that a kid can come in a buy a fast car and realize it isnt for him and return it the next day though it wasnt wrecked? Of course not! Sorry dude, but it sounds to me like they are just trying to run a business.

most car places have a 3 day return policy.

I am a noob at this also. If you have a question regarding fish, coral, compatibility, recommendations. You can always post on the forum. So many people on the forum have helped me out with my questions.
Metoo, and I ask TONS of seemingly silly questions, just because I want to avoid mistakes!! Everyone is very friendly and eager to help, and answer my questions....that's how we all learn right??

Well, other than in Pixar-land , I guess one big difference of the teenager and car/reef fishies is that cars are not alive.

I certainly feel badly for both posters who had bad experiences. But there seems to be a logical error that their decisions based out of lack of awareness and lack of education are somehow the fault of ATR--ATR should have "protected them from themselves." And in the case of the thread author, he was in fact given info. about the frogspawn from ATR.

Teo, I'm sorry you learned a pricey lesson the hard way, but I'd have to say to blame it all on ATR is a stretch--that is, any background reading on your part should have revealed a traditional practice of introducing a molly or damsel (usually regretted later) or some inexpensive fish for starters. I don't mean to rub it in, but that's not just true for reefs--one does the same things for a FW tank. You don't start with a discus, for example. While it is dissapointing they didn't steer you in this direction, if you reread your first long post, it's all about a 100% slam of ATR--nothing about your own hand in that unfortunate situation. And that is not balanced, IMO.
