Above Ground Pool Filter and Pump

My Dad gave me a xx'(?) by 30' oval above ground pool. He's upgrading to inground and I'm moving in July to a house my cousin owns. He told me I need a new filter and pump, as the ones he has are getting old.

Where is a good place to buy a sand filter and a ~1.5 hp pump?

Also, should I fill it with saltwater?

Lite house pools sells the sand your looking for. Around here its $9.99 to $10.99 for a 40-50lb bag

I'm not sure about the saltwater though?

That was a joke :)

I called Lighthouse and got prices, it looks like online price comparison may be my best option for the filter and pump.

I thought you had an apartment? I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't mind if you are sharing :)

I have heard that the electricity to run the pump will cost you around $50/month. Just check the wattage on the 1.5hp pumps  it runs about 2000 watts! Punch in your cost per kWh into the RC calculator and then enter 480kWh per month. That is if you only run it 8 hrs/day.

Not trying to discourage you, I just wanted you to be aware.

Let us know when the C-SEA pool party is

A side note though if you can get 240vac to where the pump will be a 240 vac 1.5 hp will run half the amps of a 120vac pump

Thankfully the pool was free... I talked to my cousin and he doesn't mind if I put it there. We'll see if it works out.

Thanks for the helpful comments so far. Other comments are appreciated :)

We are tearing down our pool this weekend. I have a canister filter w/pump you can have for free if you are interested. It has a pretty powerful pump with a low and high setting.

IMO it is just a wash I know everyone says 220-240 uses less than 110-120 and techicaly you use half the amps but power is calculated in watts which is ExI where E represents voltage and I represents current or Amps so 120V x 10A =1200 Watts or 240V x5A =1200 Watts. Power is sold in Kilowatts so 1200 watts = 1.2 Kw

You actually CAN use saltwater. I have never seen a pool with it, but there is a way to use salt in your pool so that less sanitizing is needed, lowering cost. I'm not sure how it works.
I buy from
www.intheswim.com
a lot as well as Leslies Pool Supplies.
A filter and pump is going to cost a few hundred.

My neighbor has a saltwater pool. Believe it or not, they claim they do not use any chlorine or bromine for sanitation. Not sure if there is something extra in the salt though

Hey guys, thanks for all of the help, but I've decided that it's not worth it for me to set this up, since I may only be there for 1 year.

Serpentman, thanks for the generous offer... I will have to pass, but I'll definitely remember your kindness in the future! Maybe I can help you out some time, feel free to let me know.

I would gladly take frag offers for it...

BUT, my Dad has given it to one of my high school teachers. I guess he figures that they had to put up with me in school, so they deserve some sort of repayment for that!
