ABS Bulkheads

just talked to some online chat people and they said that I could use, Schedule 80 for my ABS bulk heads, is this correct?

if i am not mistaken they are slip in. it wont matter if u go sh 80 or 40 on ur pipes. infact why waste money on 80 just for thicker higher pressure pipe. 40 will do the job.

even threaded sch 80 is a thicker pipe than sch 40. ur choice but 80 is generally made to handle higher pressure not required in an a reef tank.

ya i know but I cant find the fittings that I want in any local store, and looks like everyone online just sells fittings for 80. Do you know of a store that sells aquarium fittings that are not 80?

So will 80 fit with ABS ?

pool and pond supply places will have lot more selection of fitting than lowes or homedepot.
you should be able to take the bulkhead with u and check out few pool and pond supply places.

I have ordered 2", 3/4" and 1.5" ABS bulkheads from BRS and have always used SCH40 male adapters for mine. I got some from Menards and some from Depot.

Yep so I tried schedule 80 they dont fit.

Tried schedule 40 and looks like the 2 inch fits on my outlines but still unable to find a fitting for the return lines. Looks like the 1 inch almost fits and the 1 and 1/4 is too big so I would need like a 1 and 1/8 or something.

Is there a spot online that sells abs fittings? Abs is not typically found in USA?

Just tossing this out there. If I remember from your other post someone else put them on for you. Could they be metric? I know on a few pumps I got the fittings were in between sizes like you are stating and I ended up rigging some hose not very feasable for a bulkhead though.

Thanks is abs a Europe thing?

I asked the guy that installed it and he said standard abs bulkheads.

I could just but hose around the male fitting... but I would much rater have a proper female barbed fitting to connect to hose to.

I certainly understand wanting the right fitting. ABS is just a different type of plastic than PVC. It kinda sucks but maybe just get some bulkheads from BRS. Like I posted above I know the ones I got from them regular sch40 male adapters worked for me. Just tossing this out there also could the threads be gnarled up on your bulkhead. I understand your frustration.

I can only see schedule 80 on BRS and bought three to try and they do not fit.

I don't believe they sell schedule 40

Ok- ABS is a type of plastic. It has nothing to do with size, but all I've seen are schedule 40 and black. Schedule 80 bulkheads I've used are grey and not ABS. Usually look much heavier duty. A 1 inch 40 pipe is a very loose fit in a 1 inch 80 slip bulkhead and won't work (except in cases where a little leaking in not a problem, e.g. an internal over flow).

Scheduled 80 bulkhead holes are bigger than 40, but vary a little between brands. Nothing a rasp or Dremmel wont fix.

Sounds like you are attempting to attach an un -threaded flex hose from your overflow to your sump? That presents a whole different set of issues, all of which are easily solvable, if we had the big picture of what you seek to accomplish.

Okay thanks .

Yes I would not like to not replace the bulk heads I thought that you were talking about fittings.

Thanks for clearing up that schedule 40 is same as abs.

Okay so I have two drains and two returns and was thinking that it would be best to have at least a foot or two , of braded tubing, connected to the bulk heads. I think this would be best in case the tank moves a bit since I hear if you plum up the tank with all PVC then if the tank moves a bit it will cause stress on the glass. So the braided tubing will fix this. Then after the tank is connected to the tubing I was going to connect it to PVC. So both my returns and drains would be tank->tubing->PVC

I will be returning the unused fittings today and also going to try another hardware store.

Not sure if this helps but my two returns have locline installed

If you do not have luck at the hardware store check out bulk reef supply. I used both sources to complete my system.
