I've got a 40 breeder with a good protein skimmer and fudge that has chaeto growing like crazy. But in the tank a type f macro looking hair algae is also growing like crazy.

I'm running gfo but not in a reactor.
Nitrates r none. I think it's all phosphate related as I'm never home so have to feed flakes through auto feeder.

Any ideas??

The macro algae is using the nitrates in your water and that is why you have zero nitrates when you test. They absorb them and then grow.Depending on the type of macro algae in your DT,it may turn to seed eventually and then turn white and die. That will cause water issues.I only keep it in my fuge with a light on 24 hours a day to keep it from going to seed. I had a problem with macro algae growing in my DT,and then I bought a Foxface, who ate it all.Now I feed him with macro from the fuge.
Can you run your gfo in a reactor...it may work better?
....I run bio pellets and gfo.You can also do bigger water changes.
