i have always loved acans and micros but never knew how to handle and care for them. can ne of you acan and micro experts out there give me some advice on where to place them in the tank, lighting needs, current needs, and feeding needs.

any advice will be appreciated.

thanks

ive got two acans in my tank. they're about mid-tank level under VHO's, and in moderate current. i also feed them every so often, and they seem to be doing great.

I feed my acans mini mysis. Typically their feeder tenticals come out at night. Mine seem to be trained. As soon as I turn off my pumps and the flow stops. Within a minute their tenicals are out.

delight,
what are your water parameters. alk calk and mag levels in particular. how often do you feed.

its weird, ive never seen my acans tenticals.

ok this is a good question i think.....

what is the best method to acclimate acans, methods to get them to start feeding etc. etc.

it depends what kind of acan, acan lords have much bigger feeder tentacles than an acan ech. although both do have hem when a lord is feeding them are much more prominant, it seems they almost turn inside out.

I don't have any acans (getting some this Thurs) but I do spot feed my candy cane colony on the bottom of my 55. I just mix up some zooplan in a big bowl of tank water and just use a turkey baster to gently blow some food on them. Like clockwork, when the lights go out and I drop just a little food juice in the water, they basically turn inside out waiting for some food. I just do this about once a week just to make sure they are getting something out of the water to grow.

:worried: Honestly I haven't tested my water in probably over a month. Never tested alk. Calk, is this calcium your referring to? If it is I keep it anywhere from 430-450. Mag about 1400.

I feed when I get a chance or I fee like it. But I try at least once a week. When I'm doing good its 2 or 3 times a week.

Acclimating them......Recently I started purchasing non-indo acans and micros. Getting really expensive for me. Anyway, I'm really cautious and overkill with the acclimation. I don't want to kill 3 polyps that I just paid $150 for because I was impatient.

1. I float the bag for 30 mins.
2. Add 1/2 cup of tank water to the bag, float for 45mins.
3. Repeat step #2 3-4 more times.
4. Empty out 1/2 the water in the bag, and throw it down the drain.
5. Repeat step #2 2-3 more times.
6. Now I let it go in my tank.

Sometimes they sit in the bag overnight and I let them out in the morning.

To get them to start feeding. I just start feeding them. After a while they get used to it. No special methods just start doing it.

will do. thanks delight.

i dont see the tenticals extending when i feed my fish. maybe i should try at night. i will let you know how it goes.

oh are we talking an hour after the lights go out then feed?

No I can feed mine while the lights are on. Once I open the lid and turn off the pumps the feeders come out within a couple of mins.

any other advice on acan care?

what about micros, ive always found loved them but never had a chance to care for one. are they hardier or more harder to care for.

i wouldn't say they are that much harder... i would just compare them to lords and acans really. they are great corals exspensive to get into initially but seriously micros are like zoos ...they can have some amazing color patterns. i wouldn't say they need special care, just someone who keep good care of their tank and perams. i keep everything in check constantly.... yes i am a finatic.... but i have so many morph take place in my tank it's crazy.... the other day i bought a brownish white acro from the LFS for 20$ for a good size tree. it's been in my tank for 3 maybe 4 weeks and now the base and arms are NEON GREEN and the tips are bluish..can't wait to see it in a few months.. i would suggest micros and lord... check out captivereef.com.. they have some amazing lords and nice micros.

The more you feed them, the more you'll see the tentacles and the more tentacles they'll grow. The ones I have leave their feeders out most of the time now. They are perfectly willing to eat you out of house and home.

Care for micros and acans are the same.
