hey all !!!!

like the title says,i have a nice acan thats been doing great
for the past 4 months maybe more.
has been growing new heads (about 14) always nice and opened up.

i.ve added nothing new and all my parameters are stable as usual.
ph 8.15,alk 8.0-8.6,cal 420,mag 1350 temp 77.5 and can't detect the bad stuff with my tests.
lights i have MH 250 10k with 4 t5 actinics, 12h actinics and 7.5h halides
i do regular water changes i will sometime skip a week but things are all perect.
all my other corals are growing very well in fact i wish they would grow slower !!!!nice clors and all have max polyp extension.

for the acan i can still see some color but its closed up,don't see skeleton yet.
the only weird thing i did see was a peppermint shrimp on him when i first noticed it closed up,it was picking at it so i caught him and put him in the sump.
that was on the third day i noticed my acan closing up !!!!

i moved it towards the side for less light for a few days with no results, put him back where it was and not much change ??

anyting else i can try or do they do this and then start opening up again after a couple weeks.
i will post a picture later when my halide kicks in..

thanks for any help

Are you sure that is a peppermint shrimp and not a camel shrimp? They look very similar and the camels are not reef safe.

The peppermints generally are.

I would pull it our regardless.

i will get a picture up asap halides will be kicking in soon.
the only thing that touched it was the mantle from a crocea clam and has
been for a while with no affect ..other than that my torch is not to far away
but not close enough to reach it unless it put out longer sweepers !!

the flow does make it unlikely and if it did sting the acan would'nt it only be the touched area thats affected or would it make the whole coral react ?

yep i'm sure it's a pepper,at first i had 3 of them.
way back i took one out cause after eating all the badies one started
picking at red zoas !!! had two for a long time with out issues.

then one day the acan was closed up !! checked everything, tested looked for parasites !!! nothing then when lights out one shrimp would always be on it and picking at it so i removed it,as for the other it's never been near it and i spend lots of time looking at my reef :D hehe

A torch sting (and they do have pretty long sweepers) could make the whole thing react but my initial thought was flow in general. Did you happen to move your powerheads or rocks to change the flow patter in the tank. My acans will retract when increased flow hits them. Also have you tried feeding it some mysis to see if you can get a feeding response?

All 3 colonies of acans that i have close up every once and a while. I think its natural and there isnt much to worry about. Stop moving it around and let it be.

no change in flow and nothing has been moved !!
it's always been in the same spot and growing new heads.

here's a picture,i placed the coral almost to it's original spot, moved it a little away from the torch just in case it got stung,it has same lights, same flow as before..

i will try feeding it using a dome like i do with the sun coral so the critters won't steal food from it...
