Acan question

Kinda urgent.

If a polyp is half dangling off the main colony (as in skeleton broke... hard to explain) will it re-attach?

half the polyp is attached to the main colony. The other half has shards of skeleton in it, and it is dangling off the main colony...

??!?!?

My knee jerk reaction would be to superglue it back in place. I've repaired smashed torch heads successfully doing that. G'luck!

Very good question. I would def not leave it sitting there in case an infection may happen. I would possibly try to repair it with glue like Mel said and maybe dip it to be on the safe side.

Already been dipped.

I've tried gluing. it works for a week or two. then flesh receded from the glue. and then the polyp is dangling again... worse than before.im really clueless on this one :(

thanks for the responses,
dan

Dan, do you have a pic? I would be more worried about possible infection(s), it may be worth your while to frag off the damaged head.

This is where is broke.

there used to be skeleton under the polyp where the lines are. very thin amount of skeleton. it has since broken, im guessing from too much current, and extreme polyp inflation.

as you can see, there is still some polyp extension on the polyp in question.... however, you can now see right through the mouth, and see the disk underneath. (no skeleton is left underneath it... since it all blew away from current when the acan closes at night)

i am only asking, if it will heal underneath and attach to the disk, or if it will die.

thanks,
dan

Just a guess here but could it be trying to attach to the plug at that point and maybe break away from the colony and start a new. Or maybe just a new attaching point.

Hopefully RandyO will chime in, but I think you are worrying too much. There are feeder tentacles out, it looks ok to me.

Cut that piece right off and glue it to another plug and it should grow over time and form new skeleton. That way you don't take the chance of your whole colony being infected in bacteria infection or worst the brown jelly stuff. Hope that help grasshopper.

This is also what I would suggest. Half polyps do better than whole polyps with damaged skeletons. Cut right through the middle of the mouth, then take the dangling piece and try and glue it to a disk. Chances are slim it will live, but you ensure that the main piece will be healthy. Once the polyp is cut in half, it will start to regrow it's other half.

Make sure to dip it after cutting.

Thanks for the replies.

I took kase's and RandyO's advice, however i fragged the whole damaged head, cut the healthy half off and remounted it to its own plug, in hopes that it will heal up.

I took the opportunity to also trim my main colony a bit, to make it more display tank friendly, in hopes that it will grow into a nice round colony.

it's only about half open now, but it seems to be on the road to a nice recovery. *crosses fingers*
