Acan question

I have a pair of acan frags (my first!) on the little 1" ceramic frag plugs. Do I need to mount each of the plugs in a larger rock to give the acans room to grow or will it form its own "substrate"?

Thanks

From what I've seen in other folks' reefs, "Acans" (now officially Micromussa lordhowensis) will spread over their plugs, and if they find other rock beneath, they'll just keep spreading, encrusting the surrounding rock. If they find sand beneath the plug, though, they'll tend to mound up, forming something of a ball shaped colony.

~Bruce, whose "Acans" are still just little . . .

as see in my picture here the marbled acans on the right where from frags i made from a mother colony and mounted the the rock this type of acan will incrust the rock as it grows there are also types that grow lobes instead in the middle of the picture you can see a green favia colony that i've placed on the sand that is stretching from the colony onto the sand i am assuming that once it matures the part on the sand will for its own skeletal structure as well

going to start adding some acans next week any suggestions as these will be the first things to go into my tank after my anemone

Low Light Low Flow.

They Do Best Under Blue Light.

White Light Can Make Them Loose Color (Especially Rainbow Acans).
