Acan tips

Ok I got my first Oz Acan while I was at the meet in Richmond. 1 Polyp mounted on a disc. I placed it in a hang on breeder container in my 180. Low flow and indirect light, It sprouted 3 new polyps and looked great from the top. So I took it out so that I could see it. Little bit more flow and more light and it has not puffed up since.
I guess what I would like to know is what is the best placement for acans? High/Low flow High/Low light. MH, T5's or Vhos.

Tips from you all that are Acan junkies please.

Ade:)

Well I'm no expert but mine are all on the sand or on the bottom rocks in my 29. I have them under a 250 MH 12K with 55W PC 03. They have grown from 1 to 7 polyps and 4 -14 polyps. I think that the puffyness comes in and out for a while once they are moved but they should stay puffed all the time. When did you move them?

My micro's tentacles are out almost all day everyday unless a fish or stupid crab goes near them. I would say that even mid way up they ar efine, but until I go 20K I don't want to bleach them. Flow is moderate, but you don't want them to be in the path of a powerhead. Turbulant is better. Also I feed the arctipods and that has made growth accelerate tremendously.

Hyperteck/revautosports(same guy) is the local acan and micro pro. I'm sure he'll chime in.

they don't do that great under direct MH IME/IMO. get it away from direct MH light as much as possible.

however, i've seen them look really good under direct T5 actinic lighting.

chalices, acans, and micros are very finecky in my tank, i have the same problem as you.....they look great, then i try to move them so they'll look better and then they look worse.

i think our problem is the sps mind set. (more flow more light = better looking)

Yes, my mind set is MORE FLOW. Finding a low spot in my 180 is in my sump.
I am going to try it in my 33 under T5's. That is were most of my zoa's are, the only flow in that tank is may Mag 7 returm and a small 180 Rio. I will give it week or two to see.
I may even try in my 120 but that is mainly a fish tank with a few LPS.
Thanks for the input.
I would like to get some more, but don't want to drop the Cash without knowing what are their requirments are first.
I read that all the time on RC, "just bought a ______ and not sre what is wrong, please help"

I don't really have much to add, but I'm tagging along b/c I'm also fairly new to the acan, blasto, favia, etc . . . scene. My favia is pretty much always puffed up with its feeding tentacles out. My acan is the same way. The blasto that I picked up from the RRC meeting is puffed up sometimes, and deflated at others. I'm going to try moving it to a more shaded spot to see how it responds to that.

All my Acans are puffed all the time. And all of their tentacles are always out. They do best in med flow for me. You don't want too much flow as they will blow off the skeleton. Acans love MH light. I have most of mine in 250MH and they are all near the top. Oh and feeding them helps them grow. They are one of the easiest corals to take care of.
