Hi,

Recently I have been looking at the different types of acans and trying to lean as much as I can about them but I can't seem to find a resource that outlines the basic types, their temperaments, and an ID guide.

Can anyone give me a run down an all the different types or have a link

Thanks,

PJ

There are only 2 types of acans that I know of:
acan lords:

acan echinata:

I keep both on the sandbed under metal halides.

OH, and they don't get along so don't put them next to each other or bad things will happen! See below...

There are at least 12 species of Acans. All but one of those species are regularly collected, for our hobby. Acan maxima, being the one species that is no longer collected.

Here's a list of some.

Acanthastrea Bowerbanki
Acanthastrea Echinata
Acanthastrea Faviaformis
Acanthastrea Hillae
Acanthastrea Ishigakiensis
Acanthastrea Lordhowensis
Acanthastrea Maxima
Acanthastrea Rotundaflora

love that pic of the fillaments not many peopl understand or get to see it happening they just wake up the polyp jello or bare coralite.those echinata are pigs .that shiP is out of horor sci fi movie.corals just amaze me and the facy we can keep them i n our house to study and watch them is just the bee's knee's my friends.i wonder the nemo or digestive fluids on the filaments how toxic is it cause they can digest allot of coral in one night.i had one head of maxima eat a ricordia overnight and it was 3 inches away .the ric was just a little down hill from the acan and thats all it need to send the fillaments out to kill and digest.i wonder if they have somesort of painkiller in the fillaments cause the polyp it attacks doesnt retract much if at all any one?

Lords are pretty tame. I have a colony practically touching an open brain and there has been no trouble. I would be more worried about the lords getting torched by other corals.
