Acanthophyllia irritated?

My acanthophyllia lately has one side "pinched" up when expanded, and I noticed this red spiked growth attached to the skeleton when contracted. Could this be causing the irritation, and what is it?

These should really be deeper in the sand to keep the lobes from drooping across their internal spiked skeleton which leads to a puncture and what you are describing. I was always unable to reverse a puncture wound and ultimately lost them each time. GL

+1, also I don't like the look of the flesh receding from the base since that looks pretty recent. Is your alkalinity good?

Alkalinity is 9. All other parameters are good and stable. Actually it had a puncture wound when I bought it,(didn't see it) but was able to recover. It's grown 2x its size in 9 months. Thanks, will settle it deeper into the sand bed to see if it helps
