Acclimatising SPS-Do we need to ?

as someone who has dealt with red bugs, I am certain sliming up won't push them off, they hold on for dear life. Whoever told you that doesn;t know what they are talking about. You really should dip any new frags in interceptor or levamisole, or qt them for six weeks.

You do want them to slime up before putting them in. I temp just in case and then I leave out for about 60 seconds and then plop em in. I've never lost a single sps this way. With their slimecoat, they repell the water and self acclimate themselves.

Not sure if I have had infested frags before and this has helped or what but I have not seen any bugs or AEFW... Just my experience so far... [/B]

Well I never let mine slime...I just throw them in. And i have never lost any of my 15 different sps frags and my 10 LPS.

Yeah dont worry what so ever about taking them out of water. I had bought a discounted birdsnest that was browned and had die off on the bottom, basicly a throwaway.

I got tired of looking at the death and decided to prune it. I had it out of the water 10-15 minutes while I hacked at it with a dremel and superglued the live parts back together.

That was a week ago, and its going strong......

Slow acclimation if shipped water to water in under 18 hours. Any more time than that and your shipping water becomes toxic and hypoxic. Getting the coral to new water immediatly will stress the coral less than leaving it in the old shipping water. Slow acclimation to light is very important after shipping.

What people should consider is how their water parameters match to the place where they purchased the corals.....If your parameters are drastically different then no acclimation could present a problem....but if you are close then there will be little shock involved.

my lfs keeps their salinity at 1.022, mine is at 1.026, I dont' acclimate sps, never had a problem

Agreed!!!!

My tank parameters match pretty close to the LFS.....I just let temps get close then in they go...I prefer to be cautious....(particularly when I throw down some cash on the piece)

Lately I've emptying the bag into a small tupperwater bin with the bag water contents, adding the same amt of tank water (50/50) use TMPCC for 10M, take it out and plop them in. Before I started treating I just floated the bags (for temp) and dumped in. I have never lost an SPS using these methods. As long as your tank is SPS ready, just treat them and dump them.

With the exception of fish and probably some inverts I really don't think acclimation is all that important so long as your tank is healthy.
